Sick pay for part time workers

I've worked for the same employer for 25 years, where the sick pay routine is 6 months full pay then 6 months half pay.

18 months ago I decided to reduce my hours and work part time - 50%.

I sustained a sports injury and was signed off by the consultant following surgery 3 months ago and I'm now on rehab / physio, and not allowed to return to work until declared fully fit.

Although I have missed 5 weeks work in total so far, I've apparently been listed as absent for the full 3 months and counting.

Not a big deal, until taking into consideration the fact that any complications and setback on my recovery could see my income further reduced and at worst stopped altogether.

Any illness or injury pay in the future would be subject to the time off I'm taking now i.e a reduction in sick pay benefits.

I wouldn't mind so much if I was being paid for the entire time I'm off, but I'm only paid for the working days I miss.

Have I been given a bum steer, or am I just being a minge?

Have you furnished your place of work with sick certificates for the time off? The first seven days are self certified, all subsequent weeks should be certified by a Doctor, preferably your GP or specialist.

Secondly, following the changes in law regarding part-time workers, you should be treated exactly as your full-time colleagues.

Finally, check your employment contract. You should have been given one within thirteen weeks of commencement of any new hours or change in previous contract.

It looks like you have been given a bum steer, but without knowing your contract, I cannot say for definite.

I submitted a sick chit on day 1 when the consultant signed it.

HR moved me onto the sick, lame and lazy list the same day.

I'll dig out my contract and double check the small print, but HR say I am being treated exactly the same way as full time colleagues, but that doesn't add up.

I see it that if they're only paying me part time they shouldn't count my own time off as part of the sick benefits.

Regarding sick pay, as a part time worked you will only be paid for the hours you would normally work.

You sound to be on similar conditions as my place of employment in which case the cumulative time is the one that counts rather than a sum of the actual shifts missed.

One good thing about Covid is lots of employers have had to support working from home, so there may be an option for alternative duties while you recover and avoid the half pay drop at the same time.

I only expect to be paid for the two weeks on the trot work I would normally do, and don't mind recovering in my own two weeks on the trot time, but counting my down time as taking sick benefits is taking the piss somewhat.
