I’d have blown the FEO’s mind by saying “I have my loader to do that”……I realise that, my reply was tongue in cheek. It also references a mate of mine (no experience with guns other than plinking in his garden with an air rifle).
During his shotgun license interview, he was asked a few safety questions. One was how should you approach and pick up a shotgun that you don't know the load state.
His reply was "by the handle? (he meant the stock)"
Still got his license though.

Barrels are in fact sometimes called tubes in the London gunmaking trade.
It’s amazing how a shitty old gun can be easily tarted up with some minimal work.
It makes you wonder why these things aren’t just designed and made properly in the first place.
At the factory pretty much everyone had a few projects on the go. Cheap shitters that people were tarting up for a bit of fun.
One of our apprentices turned a crappy old Winchester into a work of art with minimal effort and cost.
I know a guy who now makes a living taking Brownings (not shitters) and turning them into something special.
He completely strips them back to the bare bones, files off the engraving and everything and rebuilds it from the ground up.
Impressive stuff…

Unfortunately side by sides are pretty unwanted relics now.
Everyone wants something that can do both clays and the occasional game day.
As we know, game shooting is a dying sport now, but clay shooting is getting more popular all the time.
My older brother in law has a very nice AYA boxlock. I think it’s a no 4 deluxe. Nice engraving, decent wood etc.
He wasn’t happy when I explained that having it insured for 5 grand probably wasn’t realistic.
I think I will be lucky to see the purchase price back on this

I was looking at some of the ATA stuff recently, for about a grand they have some nice looking sporters albeit the foreends are a bit uneasy to my eye with unnecessary raised shapes but how the hell they put some of the walnut they have onto guns at that price point is beyond me, it wouldn’t look out of place on the offers from the middle/higher end Beretta/Browning factory stuff.

I believe ATAs are basically Beretta clones but with cheap aluminium actions.
Not a bad bang stick for the money but certainly not built to last.
Definitely something to consider when the lead ban comes in and we’re all getting a new gun every 2 or 3 years.
I currently have a Kofs Sceptre in my safe that I’m looking after for a mate. It’s a similar sort of thing to the ATA. Cheap Turkish junk, but quite pretty and will do the job for a few years.

So, Mini Inf, is has tried claying with me, and really wants to get into it.
He's eleven, nearly twelve, so I've promised him his own gun.
He struggles with my 12 bores, so I think a 20 would make sense.
The only real youth gun I'm being offered is a KOFS o/u.
Anyone got any experience with KOFS or does anyone have any recommendations for a youth gun?

As above, I have my mate’s Kofs sceptre in my safe at the moment.
Not a bad thing at all for the price. I believe the stocks are easily interchangeable too so when he grows up a bit you can just fit a bigger stock.
Having said that, we went through this exact scenario a few years back to find a gun for our farm manager’s lad.
I seem to recall we ended up with a Yildiz which seemed to be nicest of all the budget 20bs we looked at. Huglu also did quite a nice 20b.
Depending on his size I wouldn’t entirely discount a 12b with lighter cartridges. A 12b with 21g cartridges won’t really kick anymore than a 20b and it’ll be easier to find a decent secondhand 12b than a 20.

My lads started shotgunning with a 12 bore auto.. cheap ammo that they can actually hit stuff with and the auto takes the bite out of the recoil...
I'm not that convinced that using smaller bores helps.. it is expensive and harder for the kid to hit a target, and frankly that is the thing that will put them off.
If they are not big enough to hold a full size gun then let them wait a bit...!
For pity's sake dont start sawing bits off the stock.. they will grow out of it in months and you end up ruining a perfectly good gun. I have had to lengthen several guns that have had this done, and they never look all that good..
I know many folk will not agree with me, but that is my opinion..!
Yeah I had heard they were a copy of the 686 or something. I remember the 686’s having a nasty habit of the stock splitting at the grip and if the ATA’s are a direct clone you could get an entry level Beretta looking nice if your stock broke and bought a 2nd hand an ATA to cannibalise bearing in mind when the one I had broke a few years after I sold it to my mate he was quoted £500 (ish) for a replacement so ended up scrapping the gun.

I know nuffink about posh guns other than Purdey/Churchill/H&H/Richards = Good, and my Mossberg pumps = Fun.
So I looked at the prices of A1's and D5's.................I can see why he was passing off pimped A1's as being D5's.
Which reminds me, @Gone2ratshat are you still on for IWA next year.

I’d have a look at the junior sized Hatsan Escort in synthetic. Doesn’t look much and you won’t be passing it onto your heirs but they are light, adaptable for fit and my 12b version would cycle 21g loads all day with less recoil than an air rifle.

Get him a cheap Turkish 20g. That way you won't lose much if he loses interest in a year or two. He will continue to grow over the next few years, and you can lengthen the stock to suit.. doesn't matter what looks like, as long as it fits him. When he gets to 17 or 18 years old, he knows how to shoot, knows what he wants and you can get him a second user Browning.
PS, they are a bit tacky in my view, but the two grounds I work at both have KOFS 20g for instructing younger folks. One of thise will do for now.
