Shooting at Mosque in Christchurch NZ

New Zealand Prime Minister is refusing to mention Tarrant's name, obviously been reading too much Harry Potter, meanwhile Turkish President has had his ten bob's worth to calm everything down, stating that Australians & New Zealanders withing to do harm to Moslems in Turkey will be sent home in boxes like their grandfathers were at Gallipoli.

While one can understand her desire to focus on the victims, her statement came across as mawkish, not to mention nonsensical, given that his name was common knowledge the day the murders took place.

The not mentioning his name thing is actually a good idea. Most of the studies into active shooter incidents have found that a major motivation for them is how well known they will be afterwards. Take the 'fame' part away and you have removed one of the main motivators to do it in the first place.

When you get articles with headlines like this on slate.com a site that tries to bill itself as "serious", it does help explain why there's a growth in unpalatable people responding in kind.

How ridiculous. It should be 'all white male Australians'.

She is beginning to remind me of the creature Blair at the time of Princess Diana’s death. The “People’s Princess” and all that bollocks. The country hasn’t been the same since and we seem to burst into collective tears over anything nowadays.
I googled her today. She worked as a SPAD for the Blair Government in the mid naughties. It all adds up - she is a younger, more feminine version of Blair! :-o

So what are the going to do? Trial in camera? Accused named by his initials? Rather like her wearing the habib in sympathy it's all gesture politics.
The big driver is the way the media treat these people. Their name and image is at the top of every bulletin, their online activity is spoken about at great length, their motives are discussed over and over and for people like this one and the Norwegian one their 'manifesto' gets discussed continuously on air.

It's instant fame, it spreads their message or grievance and that is what they are looking for.

Nothing stopping the media announcing the name when it's first confirmed and then concentrating on the victims instead of the scumbag.

If they knew everyone would have forgotten who they were, although not necessarily what they did, five minutes after the incident than the psychologists believe a lot of them wouldn't do it in the first place.

Nothing stopping everyone referring to "the **** responsible for the Christchurch attack".

Admittedly maybe not during the day but "the person responsible for the Christchurch attack" covers most bases. As others have pointed out a part of the motivation to go out and brass up a building full of defenceless people, apart from being American, is the recognition of people knowing your name across various media.

Exactly the same way that I would be happy if the cnuts who murdered Lee Rigby were permanently referred to as "the murderers of Lee Rigby". It puts the focus of the crime on the victims rather than the perpetrators.

That will never happen. The general public has a perverse, morbid fascination with such people. The media will cover their backgrounds, crimes and motives in explicit detail.

If it Bleeds, it Leads.
