Shell is in talks with the Iraqi Government about restoring and expanding a chemical plant near the city of Basra in a $2.1 billion (£1.1 billion) project, it emerged today.

Fawzi Hariri, Iraq’s Industry Minister, revealed that the terms of an agreement with Shell and the US giant Dow Chemical could be concluded by the end of the year.

He told Reuters: “We are looking to upgrade this [plant], and evaluate what type of products and facilities we need for the local market and beyond.”

The move is the latest sign that the world’s biggest energy companies are poised to begin the long-expected rush into Iraq after months of speculation.

Wouldn't this tie in nicely with an announcement that there is no longer any need for British Troops?

Wouldn't this be a nice time for Shell to disclose their requirement for a 1000 man security force to protect their nice investmen? Hand in your green and get one of their nice sandy jump suits instead!

Another tour (on civvie pay) anyone?
  3. Being as Shell is a Dutch company, the Dutch would be ideal candidates to replace us then wouldn't they?
  4. Duitch company? It originally had British and Dutch origins but since being floated on the stock exchanges that's changed a bit. However it's incorporated in the UK even though it has its headquarters in The Hague and it's primarily listed on the London Stock Exchange so technically it's still a 'British' company as I understand matters.
  5. So why is it called Royal Dutch Shell with offices in the Hague then?
