War, love and lunch: it's human nature says Dan Jones in his review of Peter Nowak's Sex, Bombs and Burgers or How War, Porn and Fast Food Created Technology as We Know It. In THE TIMES this Saturday Jones suggested that the prime movers of mankind's success story here on planet earth might be food, fighting and (politely) fornication: the three Fs in fact. This all fits in quite well with my personal theory, three F squared, where each consecutive aspect is prefixed with the adjective fast. It is both sequential and cyclic, and perhaps best explained after a few drinks and a decent meal, possibly before the fighting starts But is this the new way of warfighting or the American way, or has it always been thus? The thought of base burger bars in a combat zone or 'dry' wars with no alcohol allowed (try getting the French to wear this one) certainly brings with it a level of unreality that many old practitioners of the military art might find disturbing.
