Server Trouble

#1
Sorry - I've no idea why we've had outages and server trouble this afternoon. I'm on the case and hope it's OK now after some restarts and so on.

Looking through the logs we have had some really big seemingly nonsensical search queries - about 40 random words in one go for example. Finding those in the whole of the database is enough to give any server a headache, although it should have timed out rather than crashing the system - unless lots were made at the same time.

It all seems OK since I modified the search functionality (= I vandalised it) and I'll see how it goes. It does seem quite possible that this was a deliberate attempt to crash the site, and a very successful one that's eaten away most of my afternoon.

This has happened to me numerous times around the lunch time period before, actually. I just assumed it was over use on the server. It's (obviously) working for me again now.

The Newposts function doesn't work since the crash. It comes out as a broken link.

In fact a further check reveals that the whole search function reports as a broken link.

Hope this is of help.

I believe that nonsensical queries have been used before (multiples) during DoS (Denial of Service attacks. This has the hallmarks.

Don't ask me how to stop it, though vandalising things sounds like a good idea, but don't do it to that grey box with the smaller grey box with lots of buttons on it (that's your server).

ie the search won't work until I've ruled out that it was being used to crash the site. Sorry I wasn't clearer!

So it has nothing to do with the amount of people trying to access/post during the Jeremy Vine thing then :? Sort of puting the servers nickers in a twist.

We're very busy, yes, although that doesn't explain the complete death of the server - the database really was so stressed that it couldn't do anything, poor love. It's still not happy, but it's a lot better.

Sorry about that, it seemed to take a while for my post to appear so I hadn't seen yours.
Is it possible to just allow the "Newposts" search as this must be the most commonly used one?
