Select Committee on Defence Third Report

We find it worrying that some five years after the Strategic Defence Review the problems in the DMS, in particular the problem of under manning, appear to be as bad as they ever have been. We were alarmed to learn that for the major specialties for war MoD had 'emptied the boxes' for Operation Telic. Further deployments in the near future are only likely to exacerbate the problems
The Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Ian Jenkins added:

we were fully manned for the medical support operation. If you asked me whether we could match it again tomorrow I could not put my hand on my heart and say yes. We have used all our resources… We have emptied the box to a large extent, that is a slight exaggeration, but in general terms in the major specialities for war requirement we have emptied the boxes
We are most concerned to learn that 47 medical reservists have resigned on returning from Operation Telic, and that MoD is aware of further resignations from Army medical reservists. The number of resignations represents some six per cent of the 760 medical reservists deployed. We expect MoD to monitor this issue closely, to identify the reasons behind the resignations, and to take account of these in its recruitment and retention efforts.
So if the box has been emptied .. how longer can Telic be supported?[/list]

Speaking from my professions point of view. Our box was emptied a while a go. The TA/reservists take up a lot of the tours that we would otherwise be hammered for. However, they are running short of people deployable to Iraq, either due to failing medicals or employers not allowing them to deploy.

So things are officially going to get worse.........nice eh!

The fact they called me up was the barrell well and truely scraped. I dont know where the next lot of specialists are coming from, although I am sure the coal-face workers will pull together and get the job done to usual high standards.

Maybe the Coal Seam is now running dry, or to put it another way. Once the bank account is empty that is it

You have to remember that Agenda for Change may well exacerbate things. If our NHS counterparts are suddenly getting paid a decent wage which outstrips even us, then who will want to deploy if they are TA (and lose a decent wage!).

I suppose they could hope for cloning technology to suddenly progress in leaps and bounds
