Seen on a Course Introduction sheet this week....

All the usual stuff: who are you, what other courses have you done and what is your Operational experience etc???

However the last question well and truly gasted my weary flabber: "Is English your Mother tongue/main language of communication?"

Now,as much I appreciate the work and indeed sacrifice the many volunteer soldiers from Commonwealth nations and beyond do; is it not to be taken as a given that, when communicating in an Army environment,English IS the "Mother tongue/main language"? If not then then its surely the job of Education Centres to help these soldiers be more confident and comfortable using English?

Mind you in saying that; it's become more noticeable in recent that soldiers from foreign lands will now speak openly in their own languages in front of higher ranks whereas previously this was a no-no.

The times they have a-changed.
