Second Life - ARRSE Island

#21
I, being the scum bag student that I am, have to access the net through ResNET, fcuking shite! I can't log on to the system and I don't see how to change the settings for proxys?! Anyone help?

I used a HTTP tunneler when I was in Halls. It let me download from e-mule, not sure if you can play games though. I know it's possible to proxy one type of port, but not another (UCP?), not sure what you need to play SL.

Hopefully someone else can give you more information.

I only heard about SL a month or so ago... I didn't like the idea of having to use real GBP, but can see the investment oportunities. Christ... Investing in something that isn't there... Welcome to the real (virtual) world.

Problem is I haven't got enough time to catch my breath in the real world without having to take on a second life.

I know I'll end up on there in the end... you kind of have to... but bugger me, how much more technology can we take before we implode.

Ok I'm a sad geek, I've been engrossed in SL recently (probably why I missed this thread). I did post a thread about SL when I joined, I thought a virtual NAAFI would be hilarious, imagine the 1.6 Million users having a rather steep learning curve in regard to British Forces humour.

A virtual NAAFI and is exactly what we're thinking about as a first step. The option of being able to walk around and chat on ARRSE island (rather than in the chaos of the ARRSE chat room) is one of the most basic and promising things that SL could offer a community like ARRSE. The latest or best NAAFI Bar posts would be on the wall, and a click would take you to them.

Perhaps the current affairs 'hall' could be shared with Rum Ration and whoever else you fancy and have the BBC and CNN video news feeds on the wall. You can stand around underneath it chatting about it live to a virtual Blondebint if that flicks your virtual switch (and get her with the standard SL issue pop gun afterwards of course).

The next time you have that great idea for ARRSE, you're not reliant on us finding some module and struggling to get it to work, there's a good chance that we can give you a plot of land on ARRSE Island and you can crack on. Selling DPM string, recruiting for the TA, starting a secret army, publishing your blog or whatever.

Having ridden my virtual motorbike bike around this morning, looked at the option of taking a virtual programming course from a virtual / real instructor, and visited the absolutely superb International Museum of Spaceflight a week or so ago (the most impressive use of internet technology I have seen in a long time), I am thoroughly convinced that SL has a lot to offer.

Down side? It will take a long while to grow the ARRSE Island community, and the main part of Second Life (the 'main island') is full of junk, wierd porn and is generally veeerryy dull indeed, at least to me.

The next step is that ARRSE pays an extraordinarily large amount of money for something that doesn't actually exist ( ARRSE also doesn't but that seems different somehow ) and we recruit builders and scripters. If anyone is interested then let us know.

Hi,

ResNET do not support the provision of gaming as our network is primarily for academic use and is and extension of our Student Network. Our policy is not to allow extra ports through our firewall and proxy for games as it would be unfair for us to allow one particular game and then object to another. Different games use different ports and after a short while of opening up more and more ports for different games it would be like us not even having a firewall as most of the ports would already be open. This would leave us and our users vulnerable to attack. We will however pass your comments on about gaming but unfortunately for the near future gaming will not be available over ResNET.

Thanks,

ResNET
Made a note in my diary today, simply said; Bugger.

Actually for once we're not scrounging on this one (yet :) ), except for.... labour. Maybe we'll need to run an SL Building Cadre followed by a 6 month tour of virtual military engineering duties. Minefields and so on to defend ARRSE island. Not to mention the NAAFI bar of course.

I'm an ex-Sapper, so I could help you with the ME stuff, BCO!

Although seriously, how long do you think this will take, as I think an Arrse Island/community is a great idea.
