Scottish University education free (Scots need not apply)

Given the vast noise around this from the SNP government, might think that something like this simply couldn't be allowed to happen:

"When Alex Salmond stepped down as First Minister, he famously unveiled a commemorative stone engraved with the message ‘The rocks will melt with the sun before I allow tuition fees to be imposed on Scottish students.’

If he wants to see melting, he should go to the UCAS website and look at the courses up for grabs in the clearing system – then change the settings to say you’re Scottish. The courses melt away."

Revealed: the Scottish uni courses for (feepaying) English students only | Coffee House

Oh yes it can. But don't worry: it's all the fault of the evil English taking ooouuurr university places.

Why not? There's been a fixed upper limit on the number of Scottish residing / EU students in place since the fees were scrapped.

The Spectator there, cottoning on to a 'story' that the BBC covered two years ago.

Son was offered a place at Heriot-Watt to study computing. A four year course but the university will cover the first year fees (albeit that we would still have to find his accommodation and living expenses).

We found this a little strange (and we live in England).

The author hasn't a clue how HE works in Scotland. Still, if it makes them feel warm and fuzzy, let them crack on.

They aren’t charging fees to Scottish students - therefore his statement still stands

And it’s courses in the clearing system, so that’s again not that Scottish students can’t do the courses —- it’s extra spaces available which are to be paid for by those not eligible for tax funded course places

Outrage over

If you're son is classed as an RUK Fee Payer, it makes a bit more sense. HW has a recurring problem recruiting students from south of the border and paying their first year's tuition means they would only need to pay 3 years fees same as if they studied south of the border.

HW looks nice and for the course he is doing it has a good reputation. One of the issues is that it's 6 miles from the city centre so you are reliant on buses if you want a night out. He has opted for Swansea instead which is a lot better placed for the city centre and also has a good reputation for his course.

The whole Scottish Uni thing is a bit strange, but that's what you get for having Wee Jimmy Crankie and the other Fish Head in charge.

If you mean the SEU/RUK distinction, that predated the SNP government and had nothing to do with devolution in any case. Scotland's a full signatory to the Bologna Agreement while E, W & NI opted out of the reciprocal funding agreements.

You can't get the benefits of membership if you don't join the club.

As a HW alumni its not that big a deal, especially when after first year your not going to be living in halls at Ricarton anyway.Plenty of buses or taxi's and I walked it more than once.

I have an English niece who studied at Edinburgh in recent years and has now returned for her Masters. Certainly not free on either occasion, it brought on the financial pains to both of her working parents.

A product of the modern edumacatiun system!
It’s fine: Heriot-Watt is one of those ones that used to be a chip shop or something so you’ve done well for yourself :)
