Scottish Politics Thread

Well I'll certainly be in it because of my refusal to converse with them on my doorstep, but then again I refuse to discuss my political views with anyone from any Party and tell Jehovas Witnesses to do one also, does that mean I'm on Gods database
Everyone is on gods database. Especially when it is time for the grim reaper to strike.

Don’t worry God tells Jehovah’s Witnesses to do one as well. You are on the plus side of the ledger for that one.

ETA: A lapsed member of that cult recently told me that there are lots of financial shenanigans going on at present, with properties being sold and huge sums being moved offshore.
I get the leaflets through the door. It did look attractive, because if I join, I will be saved when the world ends. Whats not to like.

Typical resposnse from a cult supporter...

'Free prescription' cheers for my once a year supply of diclofenac (£15.20)

'Free University for all' except if your from England, or old or maybe you just want to get a job?

Social care, an aspect i suscribe to, as, someday we will all need our ass wiped

Cheaper council tax......only cause the twats at the top are holding your (our) paid taxes for an independence fud (not a typo)

In the end, the SNP dream, is that, only a dream....either shit or get off the pot!
.
Thats socialism for you. The Maoist version.

Those pesky Experts raising their ugly heads again :D :D

An independent Scotland would have to ditch the pound and embrace the euro to ensure its membership of the European Union, an academic has said.

In a 125-page report outlining how Scotland would rejoin and succeed within the EU, Anthony Salamone outlined the criteria required to be accepted by Brussels.

The findings clash with the SNP’s currency plans detailed in its sustainable growth commission, which was drawn up by a group including Kate Forbes, the new finance secretary.

It appears that the new finance Secretary is in favour of being economical with the truth.

What they also don't seem to grasp is that they won't even be using the pound as it is at the moment, the UK Government made that quite clear at the last referendum, they would first have to invent their own currency then ditch that

Very true, and another one of those Political economical with truth soundbites.

1. Scotland currently prints Sterling under licence from the BoE. This Sterling is legal tender as it is guaranteed / underwritten by the BoE. As you correctly pointed out, this will cease to happen on Scottish Independence.

2. Where economy of truth steps in. Is that Scotland could indeed continue to print Sterling. What they don't tell you is that it would have no monetary value outside Scotland. With no lender of last resort ( BoE ) no one else would touch it with a barge pole.

The follow on from that, is that without a functioning monetary system, no EU entry.

What is stopping them from using the pound?
They can use a currency called the pound or anything else they wish to call it, be it the haggis the sporran or the crapper, as @Portree Kid said, it wouldn’t be underwritten by the BoE and worthless everywhere else barring Scotland

You are correct the BoE would not underwrite it however, they could still use the British pound the same way as Panama, Ecuador and several other nations use Dollarization

Can't remember what comedy programme / skit it was, but there was a suggestion that if Scotland did decide to forge it's own brave path in this cruel world, then the UK currency should change the name from British Pound Sterling" to "Your English Pound", just to see the look on the face of visiting Jocks when they ask what the price is.

That'll be ten of your English Pounds, please.

The main difference being that they have their own Central Banks as lender of last resort, not the Fed.

An Independent Scotland would have no Central Bank / no lender of last resort.
.
It is one of the quirks of the EZ, Most, if not all EZ Countries have retained their own Central Bank, even though the ECB is lender of last resort and responsible for the €.

I suspect that these were retained on the basis that the EU / EZ was a new project and had the potential / still does of going belly up.

So in those countries quoted as using the dollar, is no longer a dollar?

You can call a Currency any name you want - Euro, Dollar, Pound Sterling, Groat, Bawbee, marbles, smarties or any combination thereof.

This is the important part

The main difference being that they have their own Central Banks as lender of last resort, not the Fed.

An Independent Scotland would have no Central Bank / no lender of last resort.
