Scientists flock to test free energy discovery

#2
Whilst i am normally sceptical of these outrageous claims (at least until they are peer-reviewed by the broader scientific community), this guy does seem to be sure enough of his discovery to ask for it to be reviewed.

Best of luck to him, but i'm not holding my breath... 8O

hope he patented it first, then he could make a fortune selling it and then it, erm, wouldn't be free....

The western nations will find an excuse to pull the troops out of the oil fields and invade Dublin instead....hang, there's an idea

First thought that springs to mind is that electricity produces an electromagnetic field, so we know that there is a relationship between the two. That the possibility exists that the street is not one way, sure, why not. The fact he has opened it up to reproduction with his scientific peers makes me think that there is more to it than a mere practical joke.

Hmmm..... sounds like it will be in Keith Tutts next book...

Read 'The Scientist, the Madman, the Thief and their Lightbulb' and put on a tinfoil hat :) Intresting book if you can stick with it.

If there's any danger of it being true and I were this bloke.

I'd be in hiding.

We use magnets to create electricity anyway, so there's nothing new there.

King George might have just discovered the First Irish Terroist, the man who killed Big Oil.

Neither the linked articles nor anything I've been able to glean from a search on Mr McCarthy give an indication of how this idea works.

Mechanical motion from EMF has long been used, (electric drills, Scalextric cars and Black Mamba marital aids,) as have the counterparts in electromagnets and gennys.

If there were some sort of explanation of the theory behind this it might hold a little more weight, but the article as it stands is so vague as to render it inconsequential comment.

Heinlein had it right, "There aint no such thing as a free lunch."

With apologies to Arthur Eddington:

"If someone points out to you that your pet theory of the universe is in disagreement with Maxwell's equations, then so much the worse for Maxwell's equations. And if your theory contradicts the facts, well, sometimes these experimentalists make mistakes. But if your theory is found to be against the First Law of Thermodynamics, I can give you no hope; there is nothing for it but to collapse in deepest humiliation"

After reading the patent:

http://v3.espacenet.com/origdoc?DB=EPODOC&IDX=WO2006035419&F=0&QPN=WO2006035419

[Conehead on]

The device seems to work by the interaction of magnetic fields of two magnets either side of a shielded third. The problem which springs out to me is the shield has to be powered by some kind of actuator/motor, which will require an input of energy; the patent claims that the interaction of the magnetic fields helps but does not maintain.

In order to produce energy (eg electricity) it will need to be coupled to an alternator, via a drive train connected to the shield arm, and the magnets configured in a ring. The use of a drive train and alternator and the need for a power input (however small) will cancel out the device's 100%+ efficiency, making it a low energy device with a high efficency rather than a self-perpetuating cycle.

COPs in excess of 100% have been around in areas such as refridgerants for many years, although the overall machine output is never 100%.

The only way the machine may work is at the micro or nano scales of engineering, where there are already biological motors with efficiencies approaching that claimed on the website, and where quantum effects change the properties of friction etc. The problems are then how and what do you connect to it?

The laws of thermodynamics are a tough cookie to crack:

[Conehead off]

That said, if they have cracked it.....................can I have one for nowt or what?? :?

The laws of the physical universe dictate that energy can be neither created nor destroyed, only converted from one form to another. However you look at it, until we can negate friction, resistivity et al, input will always exceed output. Does he have his own brand of snake oil?

Zero point?

Has there not been all sorts of attempts to access this by interacting fields and liquids over the years.

Any Physicist types here?

Have I been reading too many Nazi science conspiracy books?

That patent is nothing to do with a source of free energy, it is all about saving energy in an magnetic actuator, i.e. switching on and off magnetic fields using a minimum amount of energy. It's not even novel...

"infinite supply of clean energy for all" :? Surely Sir, you jest?

In my professional opinion having spent part of my career as a physicist, I say it's bolleaux. When I see it on the cover of Nature I'll retract that, but don't hold your breath.
