Schools.... 1957 and 2007

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.
    1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
    2007 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge - them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it. Mark and Johnny become alkies and drug dealers.

    Scenario: Jeffrey won't be still in class, disrupts other students.
    1957 - Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by the Principal.
    Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
    2007 - Jeffrey is exluded from mainstream school, given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability, and lives on Disability Living Allowance for rest of life. Sues school for not 'educating him'.

    Scenario: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
    1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college, and becomes a successful businessman.
    2007 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster care and joins a gang. State psychologist tells Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's Mom has affair with psychologist. Leaves psycholigist and lives in Spain with 18 year old Waiter. Writes lifes story for the 'Sun'.

    Scenario: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
    1957 - Mark shares aspirin with the Teacher in the playground.
    2007 - Police called, Mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car searched for drugs and weapons. Teacher sacked for supplying drugs, and is put on Sex Offenders Register. Social Services involved, Mark is put in Foster Home and put up for adoption. Social Services refuses to obey a Court Order from a Judge to return him to his family. Case goes to House of Lords, then to the Court of Human Rights in Strassbourg. case takes years to resolve, and costs millions of pounds. Mark ends up on streets living in squalor.

    Scenario: Pedro fails 'GCSE' school English.
    1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, goes to college.
    2007 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. CRE files class action lawsuit against state school system and Pedro's English teacher. Teacher sacked. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English. Pedro becomes street gang member and sells drugs outside his old school.

    Scenario: Johnny takes apart leftover firecracker from 5th of November, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle, blows up a ants nest.
    1957 - Ants die.
    2007 - METS Special Branch, Homeland Security, MI5 called in. Johnny charged with domestic terrorism, MI5 investigates parents, siblings removed from home, computers confiscated, Johnny's Dad goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again. Johnny ends up in 42 days detention while further enquiries are made. Johnnys Dad is put on indefinite Home curfew.

    Scenario: Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
    1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
    2007 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy. Psycotherapist of the Left Wing variety 'suggets' to Johnny that all his family are sexual predetors. Johnny has 'false memories' and accuses his Granny, Granddad, Uncle, Aunties, Siblings, the family pet Gerbil, the local Vicar, his ex Headmaster and whole staff. Everyone is arrested. Massive scandal follows. Cases thrown out of court. Psychotherapist leaves job and moves onto another Education Authorty, paid massive salary. Writes piece for the 'Guardian' Newspaper and sells best seller 'Self Help' Book. Johnny becomes a drug addict and lives on Benefits for the rest of his life. Johnny lives out his days in squalor.

    ..... rings a bell, does it not???? :) ... for those around int eh 1950s....
  2. Sounds about right except for the GCSE (should be 11+ and GCE's).

    The basic educational standard was higher then too.

  4. CSE's and 'O' Levels surely?

    Sad but true really innit?

    (Dunno if it is a rip off from a Yank comparison because there are a few 'Americanisms' in there. Mom, SWAT team, neighbor?)
  5. Not in the 50's Flashy, there was the 11+, Common Entrance exams and GCE's (O and A levels) - CSE's were intoduced in 1965 (not long before I left school)

    Nostalgia just isn't what it used to be...

    Slightly different in Scotland circa 1960.

    11+ (failied gloriously)
    Taken out of the O grade/Higher stream and sent to Junior Secondary
    Study towards School Leaving Certificate - vocational based ie woodwork, metalwork, science.
    (re-instated in O level stream after 1 term)
    Left before sitting O Levels - joined IJLB
