Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. This young Lady was told that a number of books were banned at her school. The list of books that are banned is astounding. What she did about it is brilliant.

OMG Candide & Animal Farm two of the finest Political satires every written.

Divine Comedy - the masterpiece of Poetry from Aligerhi, who with Shakespeare & Cervantes, form the great triumviate of Western Literature.

Paradise Lost - you F***in having me on here

Who aqre these philistines, RARRGH, is this some bible belt / catholic private school here.

"Twilight is banned also, but I don't want that polluting my library"

    - I do like that last statement the girl has taste.
  5. Surely 'Animal Farm' is even more relevant in today's climate.

All being equal, with some being more equal than others?
  6. Good for her.

Incredible that they have banned some of the titles listed. Many of them are truly classics but in particular The Witches and Phillip Pulman's Dark Materials.
  7. Absolutely brilliant piece of reverse psychology by the teachers to get the kids to read - well done!.. :D

  8. Lord of the Flies!? I read that as a set text at school when I was about 10! Agree with the above about reverse psychology. That was my first thought as well.
  9. Canterbury Tales & Animal Farm FFS! yes Animal Farm has it's political side but it was written to be readable by Children also, a bit like turning one of those double sided jackets inside out...

Next they'll be telling kids that Convoy_Cock & Riggers "Picking Up the Brass" & the forthcoming "Map of Africa" as well as the newly released "Pull Up a Sandbag" are banned :?
  10. Methinks this school is across the pond somehow
  11. Never heard of Roald Dahl then?

  12. The Canterbury Tales! I wish it had been banned at my school, twas the subject of much grief at A level.
Good for her, 'land of the free' indeed.
  13. Some of my favourite books ever are on that list! I wholeheartedly approve; I think the whole idea of school is ridiculous under the best of circumstances, but her school sounds especially so. Good effort, that girl!
  14. You just want to rifle through her shelf. :D
