Update:
Fraudster who claimed round-Britain walk was in aid of veterans' charity is jailed for 16 months
Aug 12 2011

A MAN who was arrested after embarking on a round-Britain walk claiming he was raising money for Help for Heroes has been jailed for 16 months after admitting fraud.

Matthew Brown was arrested in Cornwall in November last year as he made his way around the country, accepting donations and free accommodation after telling people he was raising money for the forces' charity.

The 35-year-old claimed to have raised £500,000 for the well-known charity and garnered a string of celebrity endorsements.

But Help for Heroes at the time said that while he registered with the charity on August 12 last year he had failed to donate any money to the service charity between then and when he was arrested in Cornwall last November.

Brown, of Telford Road, Inverness, admitted one charge of fraud at Truro Crown Court.

A Help for Heroes spokesman said that his acts were "unforgivable". "That people choose to fraudulently and greedily take funds for their own use, which are given generously by the British public and intended to support the wounded, is unforgivable," the spokesman said.

"This undermines the thousands of generous and committed fundraisers across the UK who have enabled Help for Heroes to commit £75million to provide practical and direct support to the wounded."

In his registration with the charity last August, Brown wrote: "I plan to walk the entire coastline of Great Britain (Scotland, England and Wales). It is approx 11,000 miles and has never been done before so I will be setting a record as well."

But the charity spokesman said: "We have never been able to make contact with Matthew and we have no record of receiving funds from his event."

After his arrest, he was bailed to answer bail in May. But he twice failed to appear and was finally located in Scotland and issued with a summons to appear before magistrates in Bodmin on June 14

Absolute bloody genius. He twice fails to appear at a specified date in court, so they give him a summons to appear on June 14th.

Odds on him not appearing on that date?

To quote Ian Hislop: "if this is justice, I'm a banana".

Going slightly off thread but still on the walt theme:

Does anyone remember a walt who used to cut around Aldershot and Hereford in the early 90s- he was usually dressed in a pair of ron hills and DBs (of course!) and claimed to be in 3 Para but due to being down graded he was currently doing a stint as the driver for the CO of 4 Para.

He had (IIRC) a Para Regt tattoo and even an FFL tattoo. He scammed and stole money from various Para Regt and "Them" guys, which I always thought was a bit rash!
