Saluting in the Police

3 three alpha "people who have passed an exam" sums the police management up in a nutshell. Note i said management and not leadership.

The problem now is that they are all POLICE "SERVICES" now, not POLICE "FORCES" complete with "MANAGEMENT" rather than "OFFICERS"! All of whom are no doubt totally conversant with all the usual pc diversity, equality & umin rites bollocks, but have no clue about drill or god forbid enforcing the law and possibly stopping crime!! :-(

May be a myth, but I was told that the police salute is so because Victorian constables risked knocking off ladies hats if they gave the Army salute.

That's very close to what I was told, but only for the Met. Other forces (not sure if it is all others) salute is as per the Army salute, but the Met, due to the fact that they are often likely to be in crowds when the need for a salute arises, have a unique salute, hand takes shortest route up, shortest route down; elbow movement is minimal; at the salute, the hand is angled at 45° so that the palm is facing inward. (This is what was being taught at Hendon and Ashford colleges in the late 70s / early 80s.)

What happens with the rest of the drill in the plod's? I mean this year at my local Rememberance day was frankly almost unwatchable when the ACF all did their own style of drill (Each cadet, not unit), the only saving grace was an ex squaddie / copper (Could tell by medals) who had his skills left in him!

I mean when I was taught drill (by Guards instuctors) to halt you did a half pace (go for a full one and then bring the left leg back short to create 15" pace) and hammer the right heel home. To be honest, I'd stuggle to do it any other way, but almost every other unit in the regs does a regular pace with the left leg and just halts on the right. If you had a squad with both styles, every man jack would out of line when they did halt??!!

I was joint class drill pig in Hendon.......the othe lad was in the Guards..could march .but didn't know how to give the commands..nice lad though....

The class were ******* their drill right up so I gave them a proper bollocking.......as you do...
The Drill staff were the other side of the hedge cringing when I called the WPC's Splitarses.....

Apparently, it's not acceptable to do it, their feelings may get hurt...FFS, what happens when some prick is trying too kick the shit out of them on the streets , my argument in my defence....

The EX Coldstream Guardsman and the EX QCS RAF ....were totally in agreement with me.......
However..it's not my drill square , and I WILL do as i'm told....

YES STAFF.........as I popped up an extremely crisp salute........

Lad I knew was in Hendon, (Fron the same unit as me) and papped himself a bit (His words not mine)! when they asked who was ex Guards, as his hand went up, but luckily there was Wooden top present to take up the pace! I could plod having an issue with the term "Split arse"! I'm guessing the Crab was too nervous to argue with ex squaddie and a Wooden top!

Are you sure she wasn't trying the ole' Guardsmans' Swagger??!!

That sounds a bit wishful to me . . . when did standardised saluting come about anyway?

According to the history books I have read and a few Simon Sharma programs I have watched, this is true regarding Knights. But only Knights! If a senior knight (based on the feudal system we had in medieval times) passed another, the junior/lower knight would raise his visor! Squires/Men at Arms would stand upright. At attention it would seem.

In the Civil War Armies, juniors would always tip their hat to seniors with heels together. Remove the hat when addressing the said senior.

The modern salute as we know it (read from various text) originated in the Peninsula Wars and based on the above traditions.

However, the romans saluted in a manor of speaking, so did Ottoman Army soldiers which is recorded. Therefore, only the most learned scholars of History may have valid theories. But it is commonly agreed it originated with the knights in Medieval times. Also, I have read it was a medieval tradition started with the French Knights.

Imagine that? The modern salute being a French invention........... Just too awful to consider!

.... However, the romans saluted in a manor of speaking ...

The Roman salute was to strike the clenched right fist on the left breast, and to then extend the right arm forward and upward. This might sound familiar. Roman people of importance (such as commanders of legions) were escorted by a bodyguard carrying an axe bound with sticks, called fasces, and this was seen as a symbol of authority.

We were given several lessons of 'Drill' at Hendon in 83 when I joined, the drill instructor Sgt, was ex Guards and got really pissed off when I refused to stamp my feet Pongo style, told him this would ruin the decks of ships.
When he asked are there any ex-service in the class, the usual Guards, RAF came forward and he asked anyone else, a hand went up in the rear rank and he asked "what service were you in?" A
shout came back " The Senior Service Sir...." The ex-pongo just shook his head and walked away......

This is the him, he's still there, over 30yrs of shouting at potential jack Regans, look at his rig, fantastic ....
