A group of retired Russian generals warned on Thursday that the country's space defenses are obsolete and have a limited capability to counter possible threats from space.

"Frankly, our space defense capabilities are limited and insufficient to ensure our national security," former Air Force commander Anatoly Kornukov told a roundtable on the future of Russia's air and space defenses in Moscow.

He said Russia is lagging behind the United States in the development of space-based weapons and space defense systems by at least 25-30 years and the Russian defense industry cannot meet the demand for advanced weaponry.
...
The Russian military plans to build a comprehensive air and space defense network consisting of S-400 Triumf and future S-500 air defense systems and the Soviet-era MiG-31 Foxhound supersonic interceptors.

The S-500 system is expected to have an extended range of up to 600 km (over 370 miles) and simultaneously engage up to 10 targets. The system will be capable of destroying hypersonic and ballistic targets.

I don't think the US really presents that much of a threat to the Sov...Russians. Threat is, after all, a function of capability and intent, and I don't think Uncle Sam is too bothered about the Russian motherland at the mo. In which case, the Russkis are either indulging in a bit of muscle-flexing saber-rattling, or, they're worried about somebody else.

I wonder. Has anybody else been playing around with space-based weapons in the last few years? Might that somebody be located on Russia's border? Next to a mineral-rich bit of Russia? Might that somebody already be engaged in gobbling up mineral wealth around the world like there's no tomorrow? Perhaps that someone is also considered by the Indian military to be a bigger threat to territorial integrity than Pakistan?

Not sure who I'd bet on to win that one. Perhaps £5 each-way?
