Russian soldiers used for sex - according to BBC

#1
Taken from today's BBC website:

The Russian military is reported to be investigating claims that army conscripts were forced to work as male prostitutes in St Petersburg.
The command of the interior ministry unit denied the claims made by the Soldiers' Mothers human rights group.

The group says it was contacted by a parent of a conscript who had been forced to work as a male prostitute.

Last year, an 18-year-old soldier was so badly beaten that he had to have his legs and genitals amputated.

The BBC's James Rodgers in Moscow says the latest claims follow a series of scandals which have damaged the Russian army's reputation.

A spokeswoman for the Soldiers' Mothers, Ella Polyakova, told the BBC that in St Petersburg there was "a network of clients" who would pay for sex with soldiers.

Older servicemen are said to have forced younger conscripts into prostitution and then taken the money for themselves.

Brutality

The Sychev bullying case drew worldwide attention to Russian army abuses.

Private Andrei Sychev was forced to squat for several hours by fellow soldiers and then tied to a chair and brutally beaten up last year.

As a result he developed gangrene in his legs and genitals, which had to be amputated.

Now permanently disabled, Pte Sychev has just announced that he is to write a book about his ordeal.

Such cases have highlighted the appalling conditions suffered by some Russian service personnel at a time when Russia is seeking a greater role on the world stage, our correspondent says.

Brutality in Russian army? Yes alas it takes place. It is really a big problem.

Male prostitution? In Russian army? Interesting anecdote.
Come on geezer, admit it! You've sold your hoop a few times for a nice pot of cabbage stew! :D

Brutality? Intimidation and bullying was part and parcel of the Soviet conscription system. Their excuse? Making the troops 'Hard'. Making them scared more like. And as soon as the bullied got to the top of the 'conscript tree', they did the same to the new intake because that's what was done to them.

What with the case of the conscript being beaten so badly, not being treated and loosing his legs and genitals to gangrene and this latest accusation of conscripts being forced into male prostitution with the proceeds being taken by their Soldier 'pimps', it would seem that the system hasn't changed much at all.

Here's an hour long documentary about the initiation process in the Russian Army--LINK. Go down the right hand column where it says "more archive films" and click on 'Soldat'. It's long but fascinating. Thanks to whoever originally posted it.

Where do you sign up? Prostitution and a soldier at the same time sounds like an excellent job, I would make a few rules though, only fit birds allowed.

Wasn't there a case years ago when a Russian sub surfaced at the end of its patrol with a couple of dead crewmen in the freezer. They were found to have died of starvation.

Yes of course! Some gibbering old bird pops up and claims that the Russian Army has been forcing its soldiers to sell their arrses down at the Moscow market? Got to be true if the BBC is shovelling it out!

And even if it is true, what's the big deal? Never did me any harm......

Sad to see the instinctive Russian reaction to a report about scandalous maltreatment in the Russian military - "another attack from the treacherous soldiers' mothers committee".

If they spent half as much time sorting these things out as getting stuck into a bunch of harmless ladies in their 50s who just want their kids not to get maimed and killed, the Russian forces would be much better for it.

Get real guys, and professionalise it. Can't afford to? Rubbish - can' t afford not to, more like. This "army" is a shambles, and is the closest thing to doing prison time in the whole country apart from prison.

Perhaps Sergey could explain his comment re Abu Ghraib? GI's brutalising Iraqi prisoners appears to bear little rerlation to Ivans pimping out their junior's arrses.

I would have to agree to the earlier post. I'd either get myself super-fit and pan these two spakkers or put a knife in them, or both.

Conscription in a value-less army is going to lead to things like this.

Putting on shrink-head, I would surmise that the blokes doing the beatings are suffering from self-hate which is then projected onto the soldiers in their unit. It will only lead to further self hate for them, whilst reducing the inclusiveness felt by the objects of their ire, unless the adapt, adopt and overcome by being just as brutal.

Either way, standing their and taking that sh!te does mark them out as wimps.

A senseless allegation deserves a .... replay. Insert a word you prefer.

Well Sergey, we'll only find out whether the allegation is senseless or not in due course.
The Andrei Sychov case was not senseless, despite Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov and many others saying it couldn't possibly be true. If that happened to him, and hundreds of other cases like it, why can't this be true also?
A soldier went beserk last week and shot two of his comrades - it happened for a reason, and I don't suppose it was because he didn't like their faces.
If Russia treats its soldiers as slaves with no rights, and the press is prevented from investigating abuses (there has been no coverage of this allegation on local TV), then what do you expect?
