Do you think they've woken a sleeping bear?
Previouly militants from Iraqi communist party helped the Russians in a similar situation. Likely the kidnappers were mere criminals amd needed only money but they were hinted about the fate of kidnappers in Lebanon where severed penis was sent and it was a very effective argument. In Lebanon 3 diplomats had been released immediately (one was previouly killed).

What was one of those golden rules? Don't mess with the Russians!!
Good for them, well done on getting their people back quickly and sorting out the bad guys so they won't be kidnapping any one else.
Only a shame all the kidnaped are not rescued so quickly by their own nations.

I remember the tactics in the early-mid 80s in Lebanon.

British hostages taken: send in Terry Waite = failure
American hostages taken: send in SEAL team = failure
Soviet hotages taken: send in nuttin squad, top a few kidnapper's mates = success

Interesting that Russian Commandos are now operating in Iraq. Is that with, or without, the permission of the US?

Merkator!

Iraq is a newborn democracy and namely US troops have to ask the permission from democratically elected Iraqi government. I doubt that there are many Russian operatives in Iraq (quite few). In Lebanon Druzes helped the Soviets. There is propably a net of militants that have Russian support (financial, military and logistical).

well done, surprising that they managed it so quick where coalition has to wait weeks and weeks to be rescued. Maybe we should sending messages more often....

It's not immediately clear who was involved the Beeb are reporting it may have been Iraqi forces and the Russians have not confirmed the release.

Reuters claiming not even released...

Reuters said:
Iraqi official denies Russians released

BAGHDAD, June 4 (Reuters) - An Iraqi Interior Ministry official denied a state television report on Sunday that four Russian embassy employees kidnapped in Baghdad had been released.

"They are still abducted," the official told Reuters, declining to be named.

A Russian embassy employee in Baghdad was killed on Saturday and four other embassy staff were kidnapped when gunmen blocked their vehicle in the capital's western Mansour district.

Seems this story is hardly over yet. And not the first time Sky has jumped with dodgy info...
