Running Strides

Having begun to start running again and trying to increase my running stride and I was talking to a friend about this. They mentioned about 'striding' or 'flicking' legs out to increase the stride and further increase the pace of running.

Have tried it but it feels very very strange - is this normal? Are there any other ways? Can anyone help?

Sounds very odd to me. I wouldn't run in a way that feels un-natural as it is bound to lead to injuries.

The best way to increase stride length is to do plenty of stretching of your hamstrings. After training over a period of time they can become tight so after each session do some stretching of your hamstrings for a least 30 seconds on each leg.
The flicking legs thing is a sprinters device, good for the 100m but hell on the pins over distance,
