Royal Yacht 'Britania' & Declassified Documents

#1
Just watched a Channel Five on the 'Secrets of Royal Yacht Britainia'. Very interesting. It was well known that the Britania was also designed to become a hospital ship in an emergency war time role, however there was also a flully equipped Coms Centre using the up-to-date radio and on-line crypto equipment such as 'ALVIS' at that time (1960s onwards), which I have used when in the R Signals. This was from recently declassified MoD documents about the Royal Yacht. Apparently the Britania was also designated as a 'Government HQ' if the nuclear balloon had gone up, a bit like a fixed underground regional seat of government. Apparently there were also certain locations around the UKs coast that the Britania would deploy to, but these have not been declassified.

Did the Britania also carry a fully equipped armoury with machine guns or other heavy weaponry for protection. The Britiania always had a detachment of Royal Mairnes on board for ceremonial duties usually.

Interesting that there was a BID 610. That backs up the idea of the ship being alongside and fixed line cables attached. Online crypto would be as much use as tits on a fish on an HF link.

Maybe the 610 was standard fit for RN ships for use alongside, but at sea, they'd use a different system.
