  1. Hello all, just been told there is a picece my Deborah Haynes in the Times today about the RTR but I don't have a subscription. Can anyone post the text in or summarise further?

    The link is here:
    Troops face

It seems there has been a leak of an email from the RTR's Col Comdt to Army HQ.

"Scores of soldiers face being ordered to leave their regiments and move to new units only to be sacked, a top commander has warned. Lieutenant-General Chris Deverell voiced concern in an e-mail to other senior officers about the impact on morale of a decision to amalgamate the 1st and 2nd Royal Tank Regiments as part of a major restructuring of the Army."

  2. Well it wouldn`t be a proper sacking unless they were generally mucked about first.

  3. The MoD say the "merger" is not taking place before 2014 and that what is happening is that soldiers are being asked for their preference as to their future careers, and will be notified as soon as work on the merger is complete. They say they have kept all personnel updated and will continue to do so as the work proceeds.

  4. could someone paste the article please? I have no subscription either.

  5. Will someone burn me a copy of the new Batman movie, as I don't have one.

  6. To keep the history of the amalgamated Regiment current, I wonder if the Sabre Squadrons will adopt the colours of the four Regiments that remained active from the 70s-90s ie:

    1st Red
    2nd Saffron
    3rd Green
    4th Blue

or perhaps the new Regiment could adopt the 2nd's old Squadron Names

Ajax, Badger, Cyclops, Huntsman and Nero (remember I said old - when it was still independent of the 3rd)

You will gather that I am slightly biased as I was attached to the 2nd from 1970-1974 !!!

  8. Scores of soldiers face being ordered to leave their regiments and move to new units only to be sacked, a top commander has warned.
Lieutenant-General Chris Deverell voiced concern in an e-mail to other senior officers about the impact on morale of a decision to amalgamate the 1st and 2nd Royal Tank Regiments as part of a major restructuring of the Army.
He revealed that there was a possibility of soldiers being forced to move only to be then selected for redundancy, which he described as “the so-called double whammy”. In the e-mail, sent last month, he wrote: “I find this prospect objectionable. My memory is that this happened in 1992 and led to some very bitter and angry people.”
General Deverell, Colonel Commandant of the Royal Tank Regiment and the senior army officer in charge of equipment, asked about exempting soldiers from redundancy if they volunteered to move elsewhere, or of allowing them to stay in their posts until the fourth round of job cuts was announced. He said that those volunteering to move to at least one regiment in the Royal Armoured Corps were already expected to be protected.
The decision to amalgamate the tank regiments, which employ about 1,000 troops, means that soldiers will be asked to volunteer for transfer.
Jim Murphy, the Shadow Defence Secretary, said that the uncertainty would cause worry. “Being forced to move units only to be sacked would be crass incompetence,” he said.
“Government promises about protecting those who serve in Afghanistan have been broken already. The public will want assurances over the protection for those fighting the Taleban.”
General Deverell said that he looked forward to hearing what the Adjutant-General had to say about how to encourage people to switch jobs of their own volition. “The sting would be taken out of the whole issue if we were able to say that everybody who went to another regiment did so voluntarily.”
His e-mail also indicated that there was a risk that soldiers heading off to Helmand from April could learn that they were being moved out of their regiments while on the front line. “If left to me the issue would not even arise because I would not be boarding people for transfer until they got back from operations,” he wrote.
Finally, he said that there were dozens of soldiers in the two tank regiments who would find themselves in limbo following the amalgamation. “I’d be grateful to know what our plan is for these people.”
An army spokesman said: “We do not comment on leaked documents.”

    Happy now?

  10. Just to keep you up to speed 2RTR still use some of those old names BADGER, CYCLOPS & NERO! The names came back about ten years after the amalgamation in 92 with two new ones EGYPT & FALCON. IMHO the names should go on the next round of cuts and the sqns should just be called A, B, C, D & HQ. But I agree there is some merit in affiliating the sqns to a particular regiment, which is pretty much what they do now anyway! Well they do in the 2nd BADGER - 2nd, CYCLOPS - 3rd, EGYPT - 5th, FALCON - 6th and NERO - 9th. Over in the 1st their sqn's are A, D, G & H, so between the two regts they have some affiliation to the original eight regular regiments of the RTR.
