Rolls-Royce (North America) wins B52 engine replacement contract

Well, I wasn’t expecting that?!
Unbelievable.
Last manufactured 59 years ago... now being upgraded to last another few decades.
'into the 2050'? a 90+ year lifespan??? amazing, absolutely amazing.

Loved this bit, though:
The new engines on the B-52s are expected to remain on the B-52H through at least 2050, increase fuel efficiency, increase range, reduce emissions in unburned hydrocarbons.

Yep, that'll keep the tree huggers happy. A machine designed to bomb nations into the stone age with buckets of sunshine is now all polar-bear friendly.

Oh dear. Micron will throw another hissy fit with a massive compensation claim attached and Ursula fond of Lying will demand to know why she wasn't informed in advance..

Looking forward to when someone takes their antique B52 into the repair shop.

This has been on the cards for some time, and if senators/legal types don’t get in the way it’s a win win for USAF.
A proven engine, better fuel economy and thus increased range :)

Now theres an understatement

I recall it 1st being proposed around 1994/5 - although back then it was intended to fit RB2-11s which would have saved X (big amount ) a year in fuel and maintenance costs.
IIRC it was a 5 yr break even point
