Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. When was the series 'Redcaps' (the documentary - not the soap with that bird from EastEnders in) first shown on TV....??

I reckon late 80s/early 90s. My mate says later.

Wikipedia says 2003-2005 which is clearly bollox.

    Much obliged.

  2. It was about 1992 or 93, I think.

  3. There was indeed one titled 'The Real Redcaps' on telly circa 2003 right around the time of the initial invasion of iraq.

  4. There have been a couple of series about the RMP.

The Real Redcaps was aired 2003 on ITV and the other was on the BBC in the mid 90s was called Redcaps - Policing the Army (link below)

    Hope this settles your argument!

  5. The "real' The Redcaps was early sixties and had John Thaw before he joined the Sweeney and went soft - He solved crime in black and white. How hard was that?

  6. Definitely around 92-93. I was in Germany at the time when they were filming it in Osnabruck. They didn't choose our quiet location as they were told that not much happened, guess what, the weekend of filming Osnabruck had sod all happen and we went tits up. Typical.

  7. Use your powers of investigation....oh sorry

  8. The series Redcaps: Policing the Army was shown in 1995 or later. I watched in on BBC in Holland and only arrived here in Nov 94. I have the book at home and so will look up the details when I get home.

  10. I remember watching it in the VERY early 90's. It could not have been after that cos I remember watching it during my enlistment process. This guy also remembers it as I can remember the scene he is talking about http://mctc Colchester (The prison)- How bad is it? http://www.arrse.co.uk/lamp-sandbag-ii-tall-story-strikes-back/39984-mctc-colchester-prison-how-bad-13.html#post4563418
The documentary that I believe you are referring to was not about the Redcaps, but the inmates themselves and what life was like for them. So I do not believe it was the 6 part series, nor 'the real redcaps'
    ... i could however, be mistaken :)

  11. just realised i posted a reply to a 4 year old post! sorry about that. I am on my annual search for the documentary ... i am waiting for it to arrive on iplayer and do a search when i remember :)

  12. This is what happens when dementia sets in!

  13. Hard yes but it was clear cut.

  14. Should really have been called "Greycap", for the sake of accuracy.
