Hey guys, I have a question about the RM officer career progression, and RM officers vs Army officers. I know that this is the army forum, but I hope you'll be able to give me some advice! I know that RM officers can specialise, which is good, but the one thing that I don't want is to be stuck behind a desk, especially at the beginning of my career. What can officers do after the first year or two, how can they specialise? What variety of opportunities does the RM provide. The army has loads of opportunities - with deployments and bases in dozens of countries, the possibilities are endless. As it is a much larger service, the breadth of opportunities available is obviously larger in the army than in the RM. The RM don't have bases and active deployments all over the place! With the RM, possibilities seem much more limited. I guess what I am really asking is how does the career progression of an RM officer, both breadth and 'attainment level', compare with what's available in the army. If there are any serving officers on here, how have you found your years as an officer? What have you done since you joined? I want to join the RM, don't get me wrong. If I joined the army, the only option that I would want to take would be the paras. The paras are amazing, we all know that, but I feel that the RM are more for me than the paras. I want my green beret, but I also want to know that I will have a decent amount of options open to me in the future - I'm only 20, I don't really know where I want to be in 10 years, let alone 5! One more thing. What kind of secondment opportunities are available? Could an RM officer serve with a different branch of the forces for a while? Is there any downside to this? What are the positives and negatives of joining up as a marine vs army, in terms of what is available at the start and in the future. I'm not one of these people asking which is better out of the paras or the marines, I would be honoured to join up with either of them. I want a long term career with a force, so I want to make the right choice! Thanks, guys, I know that this is a massive question!
