Rhodesia Mid 70's, sub sonic

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Gent's I have acquired a couple of 7.62mm x 39 rounds that are said to have been reloaded in SA and used by Rhodesia in the mid 70's (Unused lots of this ammunition are said to have been passed on to Israel).

The ammunition is unusual in that it has a sub sonic load and uses a Russian case with a 172 grain .303 Mk VII bullet with a brown lacquer tip. All the ammunition I have seen has been reloaded Russian cases with the .303 bullet and brown tip.

Anyone have any ideas what wpn it was used in. I assume that it wouldn't cycle a semi auto/full auto wpn but that doesn't mean it wasn't used in AK47's or SKS's with silencers or suppressors fitted. I've never seen an AK or SKS fitted with one on in any photo's from the 70's.
