Researching family military history WW2

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. How do I start researching my Great Uncles war medals ? Or more accurately..my great uncle was a Captain in ww2 in the Artillery, we know he went to the far east but for some reason we never saw any medals. I have his service number, name and home address from when he joined up, would the RA association have some sort of register ?

  2. Maybe you never saw any medals because he never claimed them? Take a look at the Veterans UK website to find out how to get his service records.

  3. I would start by obtaining his service record. About £20 now I believe. Am sure someone here will provide the address.

  4. Checking the London Gazette should confirm or deny any gallantry awards. The search can be a bit hit and miss so try searching on service number only and name only.
The LG should also have the dates of his commission and promotions.

  5. Would his service number be a regimental one back then ?
