Replacement RAF AWACS

In response to a question by Madeline Moon, a Minister has stated that a range of options are now being considered to either upgrade or potentially replace the RAF's fleet of Sentry AEW1s.

Aside from a major upgrade to the existing aircraft, the media will probably seize on the following principle options for new aircraft:

Boeing E-7 Wedgetail which is already in service with the RAAF, Turkey and South Korea as well as being on order for Qatar.

Saab Global Eye, which has just made it's maiden flight and is on order for the UAE.

Gulfstream ELTA G550AEW which is already in service with Israel, Singapore and Italy.

Or possibly an Airbus A330 based option.

Of course, there's the minor issue of finding the money first!

MM

If the RAF is considering replacing or updating its AWACS, where does that leave the Nato AWACS in Geilenkirchen? They are even older.

...which is why an upgrade will be chosen, as it's likely to be cheaper*.

*Significantly more expensive by the time it enters service several years late, by the time MoD have finished dabbling with it but there you go.

And the USAF ones are even older. However, everyone else's E-3s have been upgraded.

An upgrade would not necessarily be cheaper at all.

@Magic_Mushroom - is there any one particular system that the RAF says "blinding! Wish we had that" ?

But would be better for coalition ops? If we can get any budget the Wedgetail "should" give a degree of commonality with the P8 for logistics and engineering suport. Is it as good or better than upgraded Sentry?

In the 70s/80s, to address the forthcoming obsolescence of the Shackleton, the RAF reply to that question was "Yes please, the E3 as in service with the USAF".

Didn't stop HMG sinking £bns down the AEW Nimrod, before buying , errrrrm guess what?

E3s.

We simply never learn.......!!!!

Wedgetail seems to be impressing at the moment, especially out on RED FLAG and SHADER.

The SAAB and G550 options could be good but are as yet unproven IMO.
Aussie jets on Shader?

Apologies, I was going for ease of reference. The Aussie contribution is know as Op OKRA.

Air Task Group : Operation OKRA : Department of Defence

IMO an upgraded E-3 would still be limited by its mech scanned radar. If the capability is to continue out to 2035 as per the last SDSR, we need to move into the world of an AESA radar on our AEW platform.

April the first is still just over a week to go!.

When the Nimrod MRA.4 fiasco was finally killed off, the Nimrod airframes were scrapped to stop anyone trying to use them again. Thank God.

Wonder if they've got a AESA that will fit the current radome.

We should definitely get the G550. Each one to come supplied with the a dozen of the best Israeli lovelies as seen on the fit birds in uniform thread. Not quite sure where we'd park 3000 planes and what buying them would do to the national debt but I can accommodate some of the young ladies. For certain considerations.

Would it make sense to aim to have all the airliner-based systems in the RAF based on the same airliner?
Yes it would. So that will be an option ruled out by MoD on day one of the process. Maybe day 100, after they've blown a few million "carefully considering it".

The RAF operate, or will operate
707 based Rivet Joint and Sentry
737 based P8 Poseidon
PFI A330 derived Voyager.
Bombardier Global Express Sentinel, to retire

Wedgetail less engines than Sentry, new build I believe and it or P8 could do some Sentinel roles.
