  1. Well gents my brick but reliable and old friend of a Garmin GPS 12 finally climbed its last hill today and I need a replacement . I still always carry appropriate map and compass and to me the GPS sits on top of those to give extra info . So what basic functionality am I after …

Good battery life … AA .
    Backlight for night use .
Able to manually enter and name waypoints and create routes …. and ability to invert routes .
Navigate legs using a highway type of display .
Ref to Ordnance Survey GB datum for Grid References .
Walking speed and estimated time of arrival at next waypoint .
Trackback … I have only ever used this once when I dropped a map … but using trackback found it .
Total real distance covered during the course of walk / route .

Is there any free software to enable me to create routes just by Grid Refs and legs on my Laptop and then transfer ?

I am not interested in installing OS Maps onto any new GPS .

I have looked at this … Garmin eTrex Legend HCx Handheld GPS System

    Price … Less than £150

Constructive comments / help please as to a suitable replacement .
  2. My iPhone GPS ap cost about a fiver and my garmin is long forgotten.
