Ok, simple quick question. I’m 43 at university just finished my first year, starting second year in October. In 2001 I was discharged under QR para 9.405 with a character reference of satisfactory and want to know what the chances of joining the reserves would be. I was 17 when I joined in 1998 and was introduced to the bottle, and then proceeded to act like a complete dick. All my problems (offences), were minor stupid things all involving me being drunk. I’ve thought about trying to join the reserves but now if I’m going to try I need to get a move on before I get to old. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

No one on here will be able to give the definitive answer, phone your local AFCO they will give you the best answer.

Thank for the reply’s Gents. I have tried to apply online, but there seems to be a problem with the system, I can’t get past the first stage of application.

Your best bet might be to call and speak to the recruiters at the unit you fancy joining. They should be able to answer any questions and guide you through the process.

Lol, my first response to that was cheeky ******, but thinking about it, if there taking anyone I might just be in with a chance

Go to your AR unit, they’ll sort it for you. If there is a problem with the system, they can deal with it directly rather than you wait for Crapita to get back from their 4 month paid holiday

Thanks for the reply, I’ve given up on the online application, and phoning unit, Thanks again.
Apply.

Had my assessment weekend just before the Covid kicked in.
about 3 weeks before I got a letter in the portal from a doctors basically saying I should be automatically rejected for a hearing issue, but they where willing to let me come along and speak with the doctor etc. So think they are really looking for numbers and if all issues are in the past etc

good luck

You’ll be fine as long as you don‘t do the old “WHAT!” joke when the doctor asks about your hearing.

I actually did it! Passed the hearing test just, basically my age (36) went in my favour but for various reasons I made an ass of the hearing test. Got through to the doc at the end, who pretty much glanced over the hearing issue, (from 2000 or something) but got pulled on an issue with my heart, had to do an extra scan (echo?) was told that doc liked think they heard something a lot, but mine showed something but the specialist wasn’t there to look over it, got a phone call on the Monday to say everything ok, was booked back on again a week later and then Covid shut it all down.

Talking of Covid, there was someone their who’s dad was self isolating a he had but she turned up anyway, staff weren’t impressed!
