As every year, the Socialist Workers Party will be holding its annual Marxism Festival from 09 to 13 July 2015. http://www.marxismfestival.org.uk/

Among the many subjects touched upon will be: “25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall; “30 Years on From the Miners’ Strike”; “Defending the Welfare State”; “Education today” and many more themes affecting our very lives. To book a place, get in touch here: http://marxismfestival.org.uk/booking/details

Accommodation is free and day-cards are available for those who just want to experience what it’s like to be surrounded by committed Socialists dedicated to providing a much better and fairer world for all. Very interesting dialogues are guaranteed.

If you’ve the time and the mind, just come along and engage in fruitful conversations with others of a like mind or those who have a completely different outlook. All are very welcome!

Should any ARRErs be of a mind to engage with me personally (which I’d very much welcome), I’ll be available on the “Bookmarks” stall throughout the festival.

Best of luck, GenossInnen!

on a serious note - the fact that pretty much everybody - from your former 'comrades' in the GDR or USSR, or anyone in the West - have either never gone for it or have only adopted it at the barrel of a gun, and have abandoned it the second they could - tell you that the huge majority of people are not at all interested in the slightest in living their lives under a marxist system, or again, is it a question of 'those silly working class people, when will they shut up, stop having their own opinion and realise we know best?'

Does one still need a private income to join the SWP?

The problem was communism was dreamt up by, and promoted by, theoretical economists.

And Theoretical Economists are useless, even to each other. They cannot for instance, work out why markets are not efficient, when all of their theories say a free market will be.

the answer is in Behavioural Economics and decision theory - where rational decision making is tempered by irrational preference.

Which means communism is a load of bollox.

I don't doubt it - but what I can't see is why this lot insist on flogging their dead horse to this degree, or do they think despite the deafening lack of interest in them displayed by nearly every electorate ever, suddenly the downtrodden masses are going to come to their senses and say 'bloody hell, they were right all along! why did we wait so long to get behind them?'

Don't be too sure.. The ones concerned just don't know its communism. Labels.

In a simple explanation of my earlier post:

In a Theoretical Economics model: a village places all of its crops and produce on a large table in the village square.

Each villager takes whatever they need, no more no less. (This is the most basic concept of communism).

In a Behavioural Economics model: a village places all of its crops on a large table in the village square.

Some villagers grow no crops or produce at all, but still take off the table.

And some villagers will take everything, including the table itself.

Which do YOU think will work?

Fair one.

He's still a cock though...
I also don't think it would be worth discussing the subject with him as there are some things we have to accept we'll just never agree on, and to be honest it's not really something I want to get into a debate about at this time in the morning, I think trying to get some sleep and doing battle with my PTSD would be more fun.
