Please bear in mind this Currently so may not be applicable

•Tank Crewman is recruited for monthly . (This is how often basic training is run for your individual role choice)

• Armoured Cavalry Crewman is recruited for monthly. (This is how often basic training is run for your individual role choice)

• Household Cavalry Soldier is recruited for monthly. (This is how often basic training is run for your individual role choice)

• Light Cavalry Crewman is recruited for monthly. (This is how often basic training is run for your individual role choice)

The more often basic training is run for your role choice, the quicker you maybe able to start basic training

Regardless of your specific job role, don’t they just put you in a basic training slot and get you fully trained as a soldier first? Then when trade training comes up, there may just be a slight waiting period for your specific role? If that makes sense.

The only problem with that is there may be a few good months between phase 1 and trade so would they want you waiting that long in between?

I understand your logic but it doesn’t work like that. You will only be able to start basic training when your role is recruited for so in your case there will be 3 to 4 basic training slots per year( extra training slots maybe added or removed) which you can attend (subject to availability). Infantry solider roles maybe recruited differently.

Training is conducted in this way so when you finish phase 1, you can move onto phase 2 (initial trade training) with a group of people who need to complete there phase 2 training at the same time. Otherwise you would complete phase 1 training and have no regiment or specialisation as you are not a ‘ fully trained solider’.
You will also find you may have time of in-between phase 1 and phase 2. So you can go home and have some down time.

Its un related but if you are applying for a combat role do you still have to pass the old style pfa at phase 1?

Going for armoured engineer as my first choice, not sure if they are in demand or not at the moment!
The role of Armoured Engineer is no longer available as an entry job choice.

The RE had a number of roles that were very popular (AE), and some that were less popular (logistics), as a result certain jobs have been merged, to enable the RE to put candidates into roles they require filling.

Combat Specialist - AE, Driver, Logistics, Comms Spec.

Combat Tradesman - Bricklayer, Carpenter, Fabricator, B&SF, POM

Combat Technician - Electrician, Fitter, Heat & Plumb

What this does mean is that there are more frequent intakes.

Thanks for the information. So on my application where I have specifically chosen AE you are saying that when I come to speak to a recruiter, this will not be available?

The role still exists within the Corps.

But the job you will be offered will be Combat Specialist - exactly what you end up doing will be down to the needs of the Army.

I am sure you will be able to voice a preference, but ultimately the Army's requirements come first.

This is all very knew - it only started within the last three or four weeks.

Thanks for the heads up mate, much appreciated! I don’t suppose you are able to offer an insight into how long it’s going to take from me putting in my application to starting basic? Providing all tests go smoothly and without any hold ups etc

Also, is anyone aware of how it will work with my previous reserve service? I.e. because I’ve done medicals/assessment days will I be able to shortcut this and go to an offer of employment providing I meet the necessary scores for my chosen role?

It depends on lots of different factors, but the key ones are:

a) you meeting the medical requirements
b) your GP sending your medical records back
c) you passing the Assessment Centre
d) what job you are wanting to do.

If you want to do a combat role, have no medical issues and have a helpful GP then four months from start to finish.

If you have medical issues that need investigating, or a want a low volume job choice then it could take significantly longer.

In terms of your Reserve service..if it was in the past you will need to go through the fill process.

If you are currently active in the Reserves then speak to your RCMO.

Thats interesting. My intake is September 15th going in as electrician RE. So will I learn to do all those roles?
