Regimental questions.

Hello people of ARRSE, I'm new here and have fully decided to seriously join the Military.
I would like to join as infantry.
My question to you guys today, is what regiment would suit my preferences the most?
My preferences being, I would like to be deployed frequently, I want to specialise in combat, I would prefer to join a regiment that is respectable, (I'm operating on the assumption that all regiments are) a regiment that has decent history.
I have strong Scottish ancestry, but that isn't a make or break.

If I haven't provided enough information on my preferences and expectations, please let me know.

Royal Scots Dragoon Guards seems best fitting to what you’re looking for, not infantry, but do about 50% Jackal 50% dismounted from what I’ve been told

I'm from the commonwealth, so it depends on which recruitment enter I choose to go to.

Look at The Rifles. I suspect most infantry battalions expect their members to produce great results these days both in barracks, on training and particularly on operations but most of them can't offer the opportunities that The Rifles are able to.

They are the largest infantry regiment in the army with several battalions who carry out an entire cross section of infantry task's. Provided the vacancies exist, you can opt for an airportable or mechanised battalion to start with and change over to a different role as you go through your career.

Second this, except to add that we (I'm actually retired now, but once a Rifleman etc ...) have 8 battalions; 5 Regular and 3 Reserve.

If you're infantry you can apply for SAS later on right?
And what about the Royal regiment of Scotland,?
I'm sorry if I'm asking too many questions, I know a recruiter will just tell me what i want to hear, so I'd rather hear it from the soldiers.

You can change regiments but it’s not done often and unless you have good solid reasons is a hard process. Changing corps (eg from infantry to REME) is doable however.
But do your homework, identify what you want to get from the Army and what you have to give and then choose the cap badge which fits you and in which you fit best. It’s a two-way relationship.
As for the SAS, if you want it then do it. But small steps: actually join up first and learn your trade before you get big ideas of cutting about in catsuits on balconies...
You say you’re Commonwealth so perhaps this isn’t an option but if you’re in the UK over the summer the Parachute Regiment run an insight course. Get on it. I’m sure other units may run similar things. That’ll give you a great opportunity to explore and understand the Army.
RRS are a good regiment with four (and a bit!) regular battalions so different roles and slightly different character within the regiment. Jock Guards are well worth looking at/talking to as well.
Finally, don’t discount other corps and arms: there’s more to the Army than the Infantry - and there’s more to the Infantry than the f***ing Rifles!!!

If you’re interested in the RRS, take a look at each of the individual battalions as they all have a different flavour so to speak derived from their antecedent regiments. There are quite a few soldiers from the commonwealth within their ranks so you would fit in no problem.
