Recovery from shin splints

Ok so its been about a week now, ive been running cold water over my shins twice a day and the pain has actually gone completly! should I start my running again to obtain fitness or give it a couple more days? ive just order a compression sleeve for my leg of ebay for £26! :| it should arrive monday, should i wait until then to start running as it helps prevent shin splint aswel as repair them, also any tips to keep rid of shin splints?
