RE trades

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I'm currently a RNZE field engineer in the New Zealand army and I'm seriously looking at moving over and joining the brit army. I'm just a bit confused as to how the RE trades work. In New Zealand if you're a field engineer you are just that jack of all trades master of none sort of thing - its a combat trade. If you're a tradesman you still do a basic combat engineer course but then you do a straight 3 or 4 year apprenticeship and get posted to a trade squadron to be a camp soldier - you might spend 1 week a year in the field.

I'm guessing that since theres no field or combat engineer trades listed for RE that you do general engineering type work most of the time and whatever trade you chose when its necessary and when time permits for trade courses etc?

    Can someone please enlighten me
  2. everyone in the corps is a combat engineer, even planty's & tanky's much to their disgust.

we then do our own individual trade training.

    1st - soldier
    2nd - combat engineer
    3rd - tradesman

why the feck would you want to come over to our army????
  3. Yeah they say that here but only seem to pay lip service to it.
Basically I've been in 6 years and haven't left the country and I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of the world.
  4. Like Knocker said all potential Engineers go through the same process.

Phase 1 Training - CMSR (Common Military Sylabus Recruit) where they learn their basic soldiering skills. (dont know which Training establishment it is now for us)

Phase 2 Training - Combat Engineer Training. 10 - 12 weeks where you learn the core skills of a Combat Engineer. This training is done at Gib Bks in Camberly Surrey.

From here you can either go to a Regiment as a SAT (Soldier Awaiting Trade) or to Phase 3 Training.

Phase 3 Training - This is where you learn your Trade. The trades within the Engineers are varied and vast. From Driver or POM or Signaler to Electrician or Draftsman. This trade training phase can take any where from 6 months to 1 year in duration. Signalers do the their training at Gib Bks the rest of the Trades will do their training at Brompton Bks in Kent.

    List of Trades

From here you could be posted to a unit that has a specialist Role, Amph (M3 Rigs) or Armoured (Titan, Trojan) where you could do further short courses to qualify you to carry out this role.

    List of Spec Roles

Me im A3 Amph, Class 1 Combat Engineer and a Class 1 Electrician. (Amph is now a spec trade not A trade)

Hope this helps out a bit.

  5. you should not have been put on the register then. 8O  8O

Since you are already serving and trained, your best bet is to get in touch direct with our recruiting people (see links and addresses in the "Joining the Corps" Sticky thread). I know of a couple of Aussies that have transferrred across, so it can be done.

PS - saw a bit of the Kiwi troop attached to our 35 Engr Regt in Iraq in 2004 - were you there?
