mmmm..driving round in out of date tanks perhaps

Have a look on the army website and armyjobs website and you could always pop into your local ACIO and ask in there, they will have up to date info and there's plenty of booklets etc. that you can take away and have a look at to see if there's anything that takes your fancy.

Its what I did :)

drinking stories-shock,horror! Maybe you should concentrate on getting in and deciding what you want to do first.i'am sure the drinking culture will find you eventually,if thats what you want........

I have had it on very good authority that persons of a lincolnshire persuasion are actually banned for applying for a position within the RE, something to do with the title of "Gentlemen of the Royal Engineers" and lincolnshire poachers not fitting the bill.

Maybe it's because of their claim on the invention of the tank that he is drawn to the job of armoured farmer. After all someone has to do it.

ask Taffplod, I seem to remember he was armoured

OMG, you are in a Forum called - wait for it - Sappers!! and you ask the question "anyone have any experience of the Corps?" that question alone is enough to alert me to the fact that trying to get a position with the Sappers may very well be beyond your intelligence quotient.

Armd trade they will promote any **** just look at the blokes at bovie. If you like sitting in a broken down piece of shit, covered in oil and you fancy a life in tidworth will holidays in canada then do it.

The Corps hold the concept of 'Sapper Initiative' in very high regard.

Think the OP may be somewhat lacking in that department.

Considering that pretty much everyone, apart from a few, on this thread so far has given bu llshit answers can you really be surprised?

Welcome to Arrse. As this isn't the Naafi Bar I wont tell you to wind your neck in but I'm thinking it. The replies you've had are part of the banter that the Corps and the Army as a whole are famous for. If you cannot be bothered to google Armoured Engineer and use your initiative then don't expect people here to do your research for you.

Armoured Farmer Role Finder - British Army Website

So the answers that you've failed to grasp so far.

  • use your initiative
  • ask at the careers office
  • research the net before asking

Also read this - http://www.arrse.co.uk/sappers/130493-everything-you-wanted-know-about-joining-re.html

You'll make a good tankie :? :) :)

whittaker old son, you must really learn to wind it in if you wish to learn, and complaining about bullshit answers will most certainly not win you many friends.

As an example be so kind as to compare your original quiery of

"Im currently applying for the RE Armoured engineer and i wanted to know what im letting my self in for?

I wanted to know what the promotion rate is and what chances of specialisation are like? "

and the way a young man showing "sapper potential and initiative" may have phrased the same question.

Gents,

I am considering trying to join the Sappers (notice the Capital S), I have done my reasearch on the various military and RE websites and feel that the role of Armoured engineer may suit me. However before committing myself I thought it may be useful to request intelligence from the experienced Sappers and Ex Sappers who use this forum. Can anyone assist me please, with any information that may be useful to me and save me from making too much of a fool of myself, if I decide to follow this route and apply to be an armoured engineer?.

Now see how simple it is - you would still get the piss taken out of you - if you cant take that, dont even consider joining any branch of the military, even the boys in light blue, but you would have recieved some usefull answers and why?.

1. You would have phrased your question in an ordered and articulate way.

2. You would have shown that you had used your initiative by googling the word military, engineer, royal, for your initial research.

3. You would have shown that even after gaining all there was to gain from the details on the website you still fealt that you could obtain a better insite into the ups and downs of military life by asking the experts.

4. You would have shown a little humility in the face of the thousands of days of experience that are lurking within the users of this forum by showing that you know you would be made to look foolish, and would accept that, but you wished to mitigate the potential for doing so.

but you bit, you started of well by stating that as someone from Linclolnshire you were used to being called farmer, this of course rasied its own banter, but you then started to try and hit back which was a very silly and dangerous move, you are trying to fight a battle of wits with experts but you are unarmed. Again the very old military saying comes to mind, "if you cant take a joke, dont sign on" or you can place that also in the past tense.

take it or ship out my friend, this is a military forum - for military and ex military and by military/ex military - The banter you got was probably the weakest and least insulting I have seen on here, if you are so sensative my son, may I suggest becoming a nurse.

Ok, thankyou for showing me the error of my ways, I am sorry for what I have said recently.
I was simply inquiring as to what it is really like being in the role of Sapper and not just what it stated on the paper/website.

I had completed much research before I had posted in this thread originally, which lead to the information on the whereabouts of the various training phases are held, read blogs from current soliders, so on and so forth.

So i shall ask again but in a more polite manner.

I endeavoring to post on this forum so that I can inquire into the vast minds and experiance of the many, current and ex Sappers who frequent this website, as to wether I can gain some knowledge about the promotion prospects, sports life and general social life of a Sapper.

I recognise that the military is infamous for its banter as I have 9 ex-military staff at my cadet unit and I have relatives who are currently serving and have served in the armed forces. Also I wish to share the information that I do know how to put a sentence together and word it properly as I am currently studying the subject of A-Level English Language

But again I must say I am sorry for my previous words
Whittaker
