Re enlist

Hi guys/girls.
I left the army about 8 years ago and miss it as I am thinking of re enlisting. If I do how long can I serve as it is 22 years service. But I have already served from 2005 to 2013. If I join now I'd be 33 I am confused to the maximum service allowed from the age I am now any help or gudence would be really appreciated.

Many thanks. All.
Ex infantryman.

The Army website says you can join up to age 36. I would assume that if you can join then you can do the balance of your 22.

Just being nosey now, what you thinking about going for? If it were me I'd have a look and go do something a bit interesting, and better paying. You'll probably need to do basic again, so no excuse for not picking up best recruit.

Good luck.

Well I was thinking that I'd join the infantry again as that's all I know and having been on tours I know the role and know what's expected. But I'm open to influence if any one could recommend a new role. As I am older now and the last time I was only 16. What where you in and how long did you serve?

Have you thought about Gunner OPs?

I did it for a fair few years, spent plenty of time attached to recce, snipers, mortars as well as rifle companies and tanks. You get the infantry taste if that's your flavour but without the same level of BS as being an organic member of the unit (unless the CQ just sees you as a ration thief). As a full screw you get a bit more of a talking part at the Coy level so get involved in some grown up conversations perhaps more so than you would as a section screw.

Join the Royal Navy. Thats what I would do now if I was in your position. Visiting all those exotic location's in the Far East. Coming back with exotic social diseases. Better than Bulford, Tidworth, Salisbury plain and a dose from Amy from Amesbury.

The navy is out the question really as I have children now. And due a new born. Other wise would be an option to consider so thank you anyway. I appreciate the response. Gunner OPs sounds decent as I have work in sniper OPs in Iraq and conducted OPs on exersize multiple times.
I'll take a look anyway as I'm still in the early stages of thinking about joining again.

Appricate all comments guys thanks.

I was a techy type, did around 10, the same month I left I would have received SSGT, I was already on T trade pay getting almost as much as a captain so I was happy with that ....... if only I had signed on the dotted line again.

To be honest its not about what you already know. Sit down, have a think and decide what you would like to do given the opportunity. You know how the green machine works, you know all the fieldcraft stuff, so seriously think about adding a skill, or two to that.

REALITY CHECK: Don't go back in thinking you are full of piss and vinegar, getting shitfaced in the NAAFI on friday nights with the 18 to 20 year olds, shagging all the local strumpets. Your SNCO's will expect you to show your maturity and previous experience, you will not get on if you don't - because in your 40's you don't want to be a Cpl still having to run around with the late 20 somethings. Just remember blokes your age are already SSGT's & WO2's.

When I joined I wanted to do RMP, do their para unit and go do Close Protection, but no, I was shuffled off into a techy job, promises of fame and fortune. It was interesting, but I missed out on something I had wanted to do. I was also approached for another specialist unit whilst serving, but my bosses/manning & records played the "restrictive trade" card and stopped that from happening - main reason I left.

Seriously bud, have a think about what you would really, really, really like to do. And as I said, whatever you do if you do not pick up best recruit when you go back through training something is wrong. Then when you do pick up best recruit it will help your postings and promotions chances.

Good luck.

Apart from the 8 months minimum at sea every year?
There is a reason they are paying ex soldiers so much money to join

My question wasn't related to your reply. And I'm well aware of the rank structure in the armed forces having been lead by some absolute brilliant comrades that have been younger than myself. The fact they have eant the the rank and performed this in a war zone proves to me that regardless of age and experience a younger fitter nco not long out of training is more than capable just like a slower older nco with experience. I dont belive your comment was intended to be malicious or take offence but I have lost very good friends young and old in theatre.
And back to my question I asked initially about how long I would be able to serve having already served, as being a more than capable soldier I would quite easily become promoted as I have before. And even if I didn't I don't care as the job security and camardary is what I desire. I've been and done the hard bit, and the phrase nig assures me that you couldn't even imagine what I've been through as that certainly isn't a phrase used in the infantry. Having said this if you feel you could actually help with anything I'd Appricate anything useful. Like an answer to my question or a job role you may of done that would be suitable or maybe advisable given a late re enlister
I am more than capable of passing fitness tests as I keep fit and particitae in triathlons and ironman events.

Anyone else have any advice or recommendations I'd like to hear from you. And only serious answers please.
And please note. A 16 year old 19 year old or a 27 year old nco would of earnt the right to tall me what to do I'm not stupid.

Ask at your recruitment center, because the recruiters are there for a very good reason!

To be supportive.
OK guys so e good answers there and Appricate it loads. What about a local reserve unit any one had experience at a reserve barracks and know about daily duties. As a regular may not suit me anymore cause of age and life now with a family. I do work currently as a self employed window cleaner but am just researching joining up so my father said maybe reserves might be something to look at. Any ta guys and girls that could leave feed back would be useful too thanks guys for you support.

Techs got mugged off in pay slash 2000. Inf were on the same. Things did seem fairer in the last changes, but still not the pop star wages T pay was.

Sadness. No more second hand Porkers, or sportscars for young techs then.

Why don't you go for 4 Para? They have companies and dets all over the country. With your infantry experience and fitnesses it could give you the challenge that you are looking for, while still keeping your buisness and home life.

They have a recruitment thread on this site. With your operational experience you would be just the type of bloke they are looking for.

He could even consider Reserve THEM depending on where he is 21, or 23 might have a Sqn nearby. Upper age limit used to be 35, and if he is into Tri's and keeps himself fit he should have no issues, when I stuck my nose in I had to do an 8 miler (one hour) with the hoi poloi on a saturday morning to get onto selection. Its a long commitment though, I didn't make it. My local Sqn admin officer could keep a bloke busy more or less non-stop if they were that way minded, courses all around the UK and in other NATO countries, deployments around and about, and overseas exercises.
