Well I was thinking that I'd join the infantry again as that's all I know and having been on tours I know the role and know what's expected. But I'm open to influence if any one could recommend a new role. As I am older now and the last time I was only 16. What where you in and how long did you serve?
I was a techy type, did around 10, the same month I left I would have received SSGT, I was already on T trade pay getting almost as much as a captain so I was happy with that ....... if only I had signed on the dotted line again.
To be honest its not about what you already know. Sit down, have a think and decide what you would like to do given the opportunity. You know how the green machine works, you know all the fieldcraft stuff, so seriously think about adding a skill, or two to that.
REALITY CHECK: Don't go back in thinking you are full of piss and vinegar, getting shitfaced in the NAAFI on friday nights with the 18 to 20 year olds, shagging all the local strumpets. Your SNCO's will expect you to show your maturity and previous experience, you will not get on if you don't - because in your 40's you don't want to be a Cpl still having to run around with the late 20 somethings. Just remember blokes your age are already SSGT's & WO2's.
When I joined I wanted to do RMP, do their para unit and go do Close Protection, but no, I was shuffled off into a techy job, promises of fame and fortune. It was interesting, but I missed out on something I had wanted to do. I was also approached for another specialist unit whilst serving, but my bosses/manning & records played the "restrictive trade" card and stopped that from happening - main reason I left.
Seriously bud, have a think about what you would really, really, really like to do. And as I said, whatever you do if you do not pick up best recruit when you go back through training something is wrong. Then when you do pick up best recruit it will help your postings and promotions chances.
Good luck.
