Re-designation of DHFS

RAF_No.1_flying_training_school_badge.png

The Defence Helicopter Flying School was re-designated and badged as No 1 Flying School on 28 Feb 20. The re-designation preserves the history of No 1 Flying Training School, which formed at Netheravon on 23rd December 1919. Its badge reflects its original role as a training unit for all three Services with the Astral Crown and the crossed swords of the Army and the Royal Navy. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Wigston CBE ADC RAF unveiled a plaque in the new Duke of Cambridge Building to commemorate the rebadging of the Defence Helicopter Flying School to No 1 Flying Training School.

I appreciate that badges count, but if they were to re-badge as an FTS, surely it made more sense to have been 2 FTS (again)

The 2 FTS numberplate is in use (covering the VGS and Central Gliding School), so the 'rules' about the assignation of numberplates kicked in and a different one had to be found.

Given the er.... popularity and personnel management skills of the first CO of the 'new' 2FTS - now a reservist Gp Capt position - I think it's fair to say that there there was a body of opinion that 'his' 2FTS ought to have been disbanded and recreated as something else and the 2 FTS numberplate returned to use at Shawbury.
