This is seriously sad.

Royal British Legion minders for young poppy sellers - Telegraph

Poppy sellers will receive protection from Royal British Legion “minders” for the first time after a spate of attacks last year in which volunteers were verbally abused and spat on. The unprecedented security will be provided for young Army cadets in Bradford, West Yorks, after the attacks on teenage collectors.

The security chaperones will accompany the volunteers, aged between 10 and 17, amid concerns many are now too frightened to participate in fund-raising efforts. From this week they will be shadowed by motor enthusiasts from the Legion’s Riders branch, many of whom are former members of the Armed Forces, following the series of incidents last year.

Those attacks left the local Legion branch horrified and forced Army officials to visit schools to stress the need to honour the fallen and overcome cultural barriers. In one incident, a 13 year-old Army cadet, Bethany Holmes, was spat at three times by a group of younger Asian boys while collecting for the first time.

Yobs also hurled abuse at two Asian girl cadets and two other sellers were sworn at in the city centre while one young poppy seller also had her tin grabbed from her shoulder. "It [security] is something we need and it's ideal because it would keep the cadets safe,” Barbara Allsopp, the Bradford RBL Poppy Appeal organiser, said last night.

The Riders is a branch of the British legion established in 2004, in which members include ex-forces motorcyclist enthusiasts, who offer support to the poppy appeal. Rod Walker, a spokesman for the Riders West Yorkshire, added: "After what happened last year we thought our job should be to support the branches.
What sick fcuks abuse young kids collecting for the RBL?

You would hope that assault and the theft of a charity tin from a 13 year old girl would mobilise a team of detectives and scrutiny of CCTV. Sadly, my first thought is that if the Riders lay a finger on the spitting charmers they will be in the cells.

I'm sure my RBL instruction manual says one has to be at least 16 to collect?

Regardless - shame on those ignorant bastards.

You still have the right to 'pre-emptive' strike if you believe you are about to be attacked. The issue would be wether you were proportionate.

A length of pipe hidden up your sleeve and a stanley knife to 'Let the other cunts know what happens' is a no then?

Understandable, I was mugged along with another cadet when collecting. Being stood there in lightweights, jumper and a badly shaped beret didnt seem to deter the knife wielding glue sniffer from politely taking our tins and informing us that he would come back and "do us little pricks in" if we ever told.

We told and I am still waiting for the C**t 20 years later.

I believe you must be 16 to hold the tin, but can be younger to assist/hold the poppy tray etc. -we have cadets out collecting every year, but always have Adult Instructors there just in case and to be honest have never had any issues with Joe civvie getting uppity.

It's not only the usual suspects that shout and hiss at Poppy collectors, we get it from disgruntled veterans and objectors from our own culture as well. But the kind of scum from up North and highlighted on the thread should learn some hard lessons very quickly and they mustn't be allowed to continue. Is there a distinction between racial abuse and expressing cultural or political beliefs? Yes there is. Peacefully. Something the neanderthals haven't grasped. If some cultures and their nutters are abusing kids collecting for the RBL, then give any of those collectors proper protection and lock up the nutters.

I suppose that explains it. A quick Google shows that there is some variation in minimum age but the majority of English councils - including Bradford - have a minimum age of 16.

That would be fine them two quid a week out of the dole money?
True, agreed but its the principal of the thing would piss them off. Besides, the report said the antognists were asian boys. If that were true and let's not forgot this was the media that reported that, so some 'bollocks' factor is inevitable, and granted going by my own tainted experience then they will be cheaky arrogant shits (aren't all boys?). Therefore -

a) it would bring shame on the good family name (their mums would kill them, terrifying for a boy)
b) they probably have jobs anyway.
c) if they are underage go to a).

If they are not asian then, they will more than likely be unemployed, and not give a shit anyway yes.

My words may be harsh but there is a gereralising, opinionated 'grumpy old man' logic to them.
