Raising money - Xmas Boxes For the Troops & the Poppy Appeal

The Yellow Ribbon Foundation is once again fielding a team at Hyde Park for The Hydro Active Women's 5km Challenge on Sunday 16th September 2007.

Team "The Force Behind the Forces" consists of wives, mothers and sisters of members of the British Armed Forces, and represent the tri-service community raising money for The Yellow Ribbon Foundation - a registered non-profit organisation providing a support and information facility to the British Forces and their families - and their chosen charity for 2007/2008, uk4u Thanks!

uk4u was established in 2005 following the tremendous success of the 2004 Christmas Box initiated by Far-side Marketing Ltd and supplied by Gifts by Design Ltd. uk4u Thanks! is a registered charity and its primary aim is to ensure the continuation of the "Box" for the Troops at Christmas.

The original 1914 Christmas box was the idea of the 17 year old Princess Mary, daughter of King George V and Queen Mary. The purpose was to provide everyone wearing the King’s uniform and serving overseas on Christmas Day 1914 with a ‘gift from the nation’. Each brass box had an embossed head of Princess Mary on the cover, flanked by the bows of battleships and roundels of the names of the Allies. Officers and men on active service afloat or at the front line received a box containing a combination of pipe, lighter, 1 oz of tobacco and twenty cigarettes in distinctive yellow monogrammed wrappers. The initiative was funded by members of the public and private companies.

90 years later we have what has become affectionately known as 'square stockings'. A Christmas box is delivered to every UK serviceman and woman on operational duty in Iraq, Afghanistan and all other areas at Christmas as a 'Thank You' for their work and commitment. Each "Box" contains a variety of festive and novelty items, toiletries, as well as the chance to enter a free prize draw to win one of a number of exciting prizes and even the box can be reused - the lid doubles as a photo-frame and the box itself can be flat-packed for easy storage and transportation.

The second event that Team "The Force Behind the Forces" will be participating in is by men only. The Great South Run in Portsmouth on Sunday 28th October is a 10 mile run which will be the first event undertaken by The YRF specifically raising money for the Poppy Appeal.

Our team for this event are all serving members of the Air Force - not just the RAF either, but the USAF as well! The team, all from the tri-service section of JADTEU at RAF Brize Norton, have been training long and hard for this event in locations all across the globe - from here in Oxfordshire to the sandier climes of Afghanistan, slotting training in wherever they can amongst their everyday operational duties in the Armed Forces.

You can sponsor either or both of the Teams through our dedicated PayPal donation facility on The YRF website at www.yellowribbon.org.uk.

For the Poppy Appeal event only you can also donate through our JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/YellowRibbonFoundation
