RAF Regt to get additonal Field Sqn

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. The RAF Regiment is to get an additonal, permanent Field Sqn. 15 Sqn, was established by combining and re-roling the last two remaining Rapier Sqn's (15 & 26).

This was initially done last year as a temporary measure for deployment on Op HERRICK. Armed Forces Minister Bob Ainsworth announced the extra Sqn plus a new RAF force protection wing headquarters in a written Ministerial statement yesterday

    See more here....

Ignoring the usual RAF Regt slagging, this has to be a good thing. The rocks are as stretched as the rest of us when it comes to deployments.

Now if only we can get Bob Ainsworth to announce some extra Inf Bn's.... 8)

Seen on a t-shirt in Manchester:

The soldier in front is an RAF Regiment Gunner.

    In front where exactly?

  3. In the front of the queue at the EFI buying extra sunglasses and hawaiian tropic!

(I know I said ignore the RAF Regt slagging, but I've got no will power).
  4. SO if Bob Ainswoth announced that we were forming 2 new Battalions of light role infantry, we'd all be pleased as punch. Would we be so pleased when we learned that they were to be formed by re-roling the (for example) Parachute Regiment?

It is not new capability, it is simply combining and re-roling another couple of units and giving them a new name. No more personnel are being made available (where would they come from?)

All mocking aside, It would be even better news if it wasn't smoke and mirrors.
  5. I was wondering why they also decided to form another FP Wing HQ as well.

7 "Fd Sqns" and 7 Wing HQ's - if only one Sqn is deployed does an FP Wing HQ deploy too? Is so, why bother having a FP Wing HQ over it?

Rather than have, what seems to me to be, an unnecessary extra layer of command, would it not make more sense for it to be directly under the Stn Cmdr/Expeditionary Air Wing Cmdr's direct control?

Smells to me like the 'apes are looking to keep their nest feathered.

    Awaits being verbally shotgunned...........................

Where is the manpower coming from? Fiji?
  7. So having just read this:

"Rapier is a British surface-to-air missile developed for the British Army and Royal Air Force. Entering service in 1971, it eventually replaced all other anti-aircraft weapons in Army service.... It remains the UK's primary air-defense weapon after almost 35 years of service, and is expected to serve until 2020."

on Wikipedia, what is our anti-air defence made from now that we don't have Rapier?

And also, are Rapier specialists necessarily the best people to man a field squadron?

  10. err dreadding a huge wahhh but read that again, where does it say we don't have Rapier ?
  11. Not a wah, just me not knowing something. The piece says they're re-roling the last two Rapier squadrons. That implies to me that the rest were re-rolled/sacked some time ago. Happy to be wrong, though.
  12. The establishment of an FP Wg HQ to sit alongside 121 EAW when in garrison and to deploy under the EAW Cdr on ops is a key decision. Apart form the obvious synergies (and other staff buzzwords) it will enable the alignment of training/deployment cycles of the at readiness EAW and its associated FP Wg HQ.

  13. Rapier went back to the RA a while back. This is just another "political" expansion, using resources that are already in exsitence... Just yet more bollox! The RAF Regt are undermanned as it is, It's a bit like saying we're gonna have 4 extra battn of Lt Inf, just they're only 300 strong instead of 5-600!
Its a bit like the last days of the Third Reich, divisions down to a couple of hundred men and battalions down to less than the size of a company...... Looks good on the situation map back in Broon's HQ........

How are the RAF Regiment gaining an additional field Sqn?
15 & 26 are re- rolling to form 15 sqn
So I've tried the abacus, calculator and fingers and toes and can't get it to add up!
Take 2 field Sqn of approx 120 men = 240 men
Take 60 from each = 120 men therefore a field Sqn call it 15 Sqn
Divvy up the kit from both Sqns so they have right amount of Landrovers etc
Post remaining 120 men through out RAF Regiment - plus leavers etc

So really shouldn't Bob Aisworth be stating I've decided not to chop 15 Sqn Raf Regiment but 26 Sqn is disbanding?

To claim its a brand new additional Sqn is (to quote the man himself) B0llox
It's still a cut plain and simple :x
