RAF Regiment?

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Will they go?
  2. No.

However, I think there was mention of a reduction of a couple of Field Sqns post HERRICK.

  3. What do they do now that they're not in charge of airstrip security, anyway?

    Arent they?
Kind of removes there reason to exist doesnt it?
  5. They had one? In my time in 16 Anti Aircraft Bde they were a bit of a non-event.
  6. Oh No they are really very active now, looking after Security at KAF in ISAF. However, I think that there will be some pressure on the RAF not to retain them post 2012.
  7. No Big Dave said we were investing more cash in our SF

I did try typing that with a straight face honestly
  8. I can't read it with one!
  9. NBC is so 1990s luvvy - it's CBRN these days!

Actually NBC/CBRN isn't that bad - it's the decon role nobody wants.
27 Sqn RAF Regt were responsible for manning the IBDS/PBDS box-bodies, but I thought they recently quit that role, with the RAuxAF taking this on. I may be wrong - it's been a while since I ventured as far as the pointy-headed lands of East Anglia...
  10. I really cannot see the point of taking highly trained professional soldiers and putting them in an NBC role that is unlikely to ever be utilised. Why not simply convert them into line infantry, retaining recognition of their light blue background and specialist skills?

Surely the size of the force is controlled pretty much by the size of what they have to protect. Smaller air force ergo smaller force protection!

"Why not simply convert them into line infantry, retaining recognition of their light blue background and specialist skills? "
been done before in 1944 many were disbanded and sent to the Army as infantry recruits!
  12. The question is how many RAF Regt are required to protect airstrips used by our deployed airframes.

Exactly, if the RAF falls in numbers to say roughly half then the RAF Regt would surely follow! Means less of a queue at Pizza hut I suppose?
  14. I for one think that the loss of our crack troops of the RAF Regt would be a cut too far. Who will then fulfill all the roles the army dont want?

All joking aside I think with no role there is no need. You could have a Naval Division again after all plenty of Matelots stood around!
There will I suspect be little demand for that level of manning once we go all isolationist again and concentrate on Uk, WI and FI.
Nato is pretty much a busted flush, ISAF has shown that commitment isnt what it could be from our allies. Either the next two Govts take us into an EU force or not but either way I forsee NTO becoming a mates club with us and The Yanks looking after the North Atlantic and nothing else!
