well done in joining the finest arm or the finest regiment, you will be either 40 RA, 7 (Para) RHA or 29 Commando RA, the later 2 also require you pass a selection course. I'd have a look at 148 battery also, as part of your career plan

good luck !

Anyway...............
There are 3 Light Gun regiments - 7 Para RHA (in Colchester), 29 Commando (Cdo) Regiment RA (Plymouth and Arbroath) and 40 Regiment RA (Topcliffe, North Yorks until Dec 08 then Lisburn Northern Ireland). 7 Para and 29 Commando are specialist units that, in recruiting terms, are tagged as 'specialist volunteer' This means if you select either 7 Para or 29 Cdo you are guaranteed to be posted there. Clearly there is then the small hurdle of either P Company or the All Arms Commando course to pass. 40 Regt RA is not a specialist volunteer unit so while you can indicate your desire to join them, and there's a very good chance you'll end up there it is not 100%. you will, however, find out by the end of Phase 1 training.

Cheers for that, i knew about 29 Cdo and 7 RHA but was not entirely sure you could specifiy before Phase 1. After reading their part of the RA site, am i likely to be the only bloke from the Black Country in 40 Regiment as they are the "Lowland Gunners"?

Far from it, even the Highland Gunners are full of non-jocks, regional areas have a habit of changing anyway, 39 Regt recently became the Welsh Gunners FFS

Word of warning however, I know you selected Lt Gunner, but I wouldn't bet too much money on you actually doing it, things change when you get to training

Trust me, if 40 Regiment relied purely on 'lowland' recruits they'd be pretty thin on the ground. Personnel who join 40 Regiment are attracted by the equipment and role and, like you, come from all over the country. Of course, they also receive Scottish soldiers and have strong links into that area - this is part of their identity and ethos, which they are rightly proud of. But please do not think you'll be outnumbered, you won't.
