Your avatar can be stored on your computer. Just update your profile, and put the path to the picture in.

Putting pictures etc in your posts, you need to have a link to your selected picture on t'internet and be publicy accesible. I think it's explained somewhere on this site, but can't remember where.

for example, the following :-
