  1. Details;

    I don't normally take the side of the mad mullahs, but is there really any need to publish such a provocative book? Obviously I cannot condone the inevitable attacks on the publishers, writer, bookshops etc, but surely this is an easily avoided problem?
  2. I seriously doubt it will see the light of day over here. so much for freedom of speech. however it will still be available over the internet.
  3. Last time i checked people can write what they like about anyone in this country (freedom of speech??!!) as long as it doesn't brake any laws which as far as i can tell this book doesn't.

    if the muslim community is offended (surprise surprise..) then they can f**k of.

    end of.
  4. seconded!
  5. We've earned the right to free speech, granted. What I am asking is, do we really need to use it in this instance? This smells like extremist-baiting to me, purely to increase sales by sensationalism.
  6. I think the point being missed is that the more provocative, the more interest is generated through the media and therefore more purchases by the inquisitive and so more profit. It's been used any times before - anyone read The Satanic Verses? It's crap. Anyone heard of Salman Rushdie before the publication of this book? Didn't think so.

    However if people are lobbing fire-bombs about because they don't understand how 'fiction' works then I'd suggest that it's not the author or publisher that's in the wrong here.

    I’m also failing to see why this is being discussed on the Current Affairs board of a British Army website.
  8. Because it is an AFFAIR that is happening CURRENTly, hence the BBC News feed link. Feel free to suggest a more suitable board, maybe the Mods will oblige.

    With no relevance to the British Army.

    I think PTP has made his stance known previously and will no doubt advise.
  10. Again, this sort of issue arises.

    Is this book being published in a predominantly Islamic country? - not that I am aware of. Therefore, it is only 'provocative' to the extent that Western-based Islamic activists and their lily-livered apologists in the West say that it is 'provocative'. To prevent or limit the publication of this book - a work of historical fiction from what I can tell - is to allow such people set the agenda and determie what is acceptable and what is not.

    The 'Danish cartoons' were published in a small and relatively obscure newspaper, yet months later, some mullahs decided that they had been insulted. Those that are determined to be insulted at every turn will always find something to complain's PC taken to its illogical conclusion, coupled with a desire to determine what can and cannot be discussed. Islamists will be watching this latest round in what I might term the Eurabian Culture Wars very closely, for signs that the moral and cultural integrity of the West is coming apart at the seams. Like the PC war on Christmas or public displays of Western religious tradition - or indeed any Western tradition - this is but another hariline crack in the entire edifice of what constitutes 'the West'.
  11. I can.

    Binned. Not your fault SBM, we've simply too many bigoted agenda driving civvy wankstains knocking around to get a worthwhile discussion out of this.

    And I agree with you, it's just to sell a mediocre novel, and this publishing house seems to be specialising in texts other people won't touch for damn good reasons.
