Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Just been watching a cop programme on BBC1 old boy born in in 1925 claims that he was a POW with the Germans at 17 and they handed him over to the Japs. Was there any cases of this?

  2. Only way I can see this happening is if he were Captured by a U-Boat or Raider in the Indian Ocean or similar.

    U-168, 183, 196, 197, 198, 234, 533, 537, 852, 859 all served in the Indian Ocean AO.

Otherwise why transport someone from Western Europe POW cage to the Pacific?

  3. Yes, it's quite possible.

The SS Nankin was one of a number of merchant ships whose crew were taken prisoner by the German raider Thor in the Indian Ocean,
They were taken to Yokohama and handed over to the Japanese.

  4. The program featured Humberside police & as the old guy was from Hull the chances are he was a MN seaman.
