Pride of Britain Awards

I didn't see it but apparently the Corps won the Pride of Britain Awards last night. I think it ws 59 and their work in Pakistan.

And guess what, they couldn't be there because they were in Afghanistan. Very ironic me thinks.

Anyway, well done to them and great publicity for the Army.

COUNTDOWN TO PRIDE OF BRITAIN 2006
Join the nation in celebrating the achievements of our real national heroes at the glittering Pride of Britain Awards 2006 on Monday November 6th.

It's the most prestigious event of its kind. And a night that no-one wants to forget.

Hosted by Carol Vorderman, the nation's greatest showbusiness, music and sports stars will unite to honour the most extraordinary unsung heroes in the land. And one thing is certain - their stories are guaranteed to inspire and move the whole country.

For the eighth year, the event in Central London will be televised nationwide to millions of viewers on the ITV1 network.

Prince Charles will again take part. Since the awards began, distinguished guests have included Prime Minister Tony Blair, Sir Paul McCartney, David and Victoria Beckham, Sir Michael Caine, Robbie Williams, Sting, Bono, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, the Duchess of York and Diana Ross.

This year's Pride of Britain Awards is already building to be bigger - and more amazing - than ever.

So please tune in on ITV1 on Tuesday November 7.

Excellent - so the likes of Victoria Beckham, Robbie Williams, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne are placed in the category of "distinguished". Distinguished from the rest of us presumably on the basis of being trivial celebrity fluff whose fame, and indeed very existence, is dependent entirely on the whim of the tabloids.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION
59 Independent Commando Squadron for Bagh earthquake relief
ONE of the worst hit areas of the South Asia earthquake in October 2005, which claimed 75,000 lives, was Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Mountain communities were cut off as they scrambled to find survivors, bury dead and ward off hunger and disease.

Among the aid workers, 76 Royal Engineers of the 59 Independent Commando Squadron came to the Bagh region to bring aid and rebuild communities.

They built 17 health centres and 30 school shelters despite

sub-zero temperatures at high altitude and distributed vital food and clothing. Defence Secretary Des Browne says: “The outstanding work they did is a shining example of all that is best about our military.”
