Presentable Watches

I have decided I want one of these. My birthday is next month. I’m well paid and as it’s my 55th AFPS 75 is giving me a health boost. Cost is not an obstacle but getting The Sainted Mrs Devex (Peace be upon her) to agree May be harder. I need to tell her it’s not THAT expensive without actually revealing the price. I may ask for Contributions in lieu of presents and slide it in under the radar.

My birthday is on Monday and had this Covid malarkey not popped up a new purchase would on the wrist right now. I was thinking about a simple Rolex Oyster Perpetual but I’m thinking that discretion may be the better part right now.

Just do what they do with shoes and handbags!

'What? This? I've had it for ages - don't you remember I bought it when.....'

Mine still hasn't noticed the blue Seiko from a few posts back!

Yema - while a bit 'samey' most of them look very clear to read; and I value that in a watch.

I do quite like that too and have been eyeing it lustingly for about a year now. Similar to your problem I am trying to figure out how to slide it in under the radar.

A mate in Leeds, Andy “the Greek” P******s, used to deal in top end watches as a sideline. I learnt from him that the best (cheapest) thing to do when wanting a flash watch is to let someone else take the hit of the initial value depreciation and buy secondhand.

Plenty of reputable auctioneers run regular watch auctions, Covid-19 notwithstanding.

I casually mentioned over lunch that I’d be seeking donations and described out as A work in progress. I’ll collect the offerings and order and be damned. I think it’s £150 down and the rest on 0% for six months which is pretty fair, Covid notwithstanding

ETA £153 down the either 6x106 or 12x 53

@Effendi @devexwarrior,

Christhopher Ward do an offer of £100 off the cost of any watch over £500.

Promo code 100SPRING20

I was just having a look for interest. Watchbox has a US Used Oyster Perpetual for $8,851 Canadian whilst the price listed in my local dealer is $6,700. I’m not sure if the local one is actually there but weird eh.

I would assume that depends wheteher the model you want is desirable, collectible and in short supply.

For example: I have a Rolex Sub, stainless, model 168000, it cost around $1300 new. Nowadays the collector crowd call it the "triple zero", or the "transitional model". It is well worn, was never shown any mercy as it was my daily watch for around 25 years and yet I am told it is worth more than a brand new stainless Sub. My lad has dibs on it.

The thing to do is to fix a price in your mind and stick to it, then keep an eye on the reputable watch auctions. The watch sales websites are all people who want top $ for whatever they are trying to shift. As I said my mate Andy used to get along to the auctions, and I know one of the non-Rolex franchised jewellers in Market Harborough who always had a fair selection in the window used to get along to the London auctions too.

Good for you nice to pass on something special down the family. I would love to see kids and grandkids enjoying something I did, and I hope to pass on my watches when I’m still around.

This is a very simple Rolex no complications and I was amazed at the markup on new. If they aren’t my local jeweller it’s worth buying a couple to make some cash, Covid notwithstanding.

Have a look at the price increases on the 007 Omegas. There should be one coming out for the new film sometime so if you can hang on, and don't mind an Omega, then you will have a watch that is guaranteed to increase in gizzit value over even the short'ish term.

Mmmmm - might have to look at that C60 Abyss...............
Careful, I currently own 3 Chris Ward watches, and I have my eye on a couple more.

I like the new Bond Omegas but I have a Seamaster already and it would be too similar.

That looks cool - I did look at the ordering page and couldn't see the promo box - I'll look closer when I push the button. I emailed CW and they are trading as normal though express delivery is not available so it's 4 day snail mail delivery.

One thing about this lock-down malarkey is that it provides time to think. However, as many of you will know, that is possibly not a good thing. Let me explain.

The Long Haired Admiral and myself have been in (splendid) isolation for 6 weeks as of today. Normally we have a pretty good life. With the lockdown, socialising and driving etc, even going for a coffee has gone out the window. I spend about 50 euros a week on fuel (6 x 50 = 300). We have a take-away curry most Fridays (6 x 30 = 180), then there are generally meals out once or twice a week (6 x say 60 = 360). Our normal grocery bill is for argument’s sake 100 a week, and we are now on about 50 a week. Then there are all the friperies like boy’s toys, shoes, handbags etc we are not buying.

So as I understand it, in my bank account now contains a buckshee amount of loot, more than enough for say……. A nice CW C60 Abyss. Especially with the promo code! That, I think will be my last one.

Probably.
