plain clothes surveillance in the gunners?

#1
Just had my final interview before adsc with the major at my afco. just to confirm my job choices (int corps/ gunners/ gunners) and ask the same thing 5 different ways. He mentioned something about a new specialisation in the observation post assistant job involving civvie clothed OP work. he was in the rifles so i dunno if he was chattin poo or talking special forces?
does such a position exist?

usually left to THEM is that sort of thing, or variations on the theme of THEM anyway.

Opportunities to put oneself forward for that sort of palaver are open to all arms and services, but it's generally accepted as a wise move to get a solid background in green soldiering first.

so basically he was just trying to wet my whislte with the supposed glamour of being one of them one day. i thought it sounded strange. anyway thanks for clearing it up.

Oh I can think of occasions were Gunners have done OP work in civvies

But that would be telling

younghopeful, he's not BSing you, but over simplying, plain clothes OPs is not just for "THEM" in fact if anyone does it now its more likely SRR

I did it once at Sennybridge, dressed as a farmer in a beat up old civvi landrover, Made complete cnuts out of the cadets from Sandhurst who got quite upset when they found out I was staying in a B&B in Llanwrtyd Wells, well it was very cold.

I suspect he's painting a rosey picture. Probably massaging the truth somewhat. I was posted to 3RHA so only have a limited amount background on t'Gunners and wouldn't want to pontificate.

All recruiters lay on the B-S. They want bums on seats! I'm sure they are on commission work! They will tell you all the stuff you want to hear.....don't they?

I do recall tho the special OPs from 5 Regt RA (?) doin some work (military aid to civil authorities?) hiding in some field observing potential poachers of rare breed Bird's eggs some years ago?
Can someone confirm this? But I guess that wasn't in mufti.

What are SRR if not members of the SF fraternity? Hence "variations on a theme of THEM". There are actually quite a few different units you can get involved with if you want to wear civvies and do all that secret squirrel stuff but yes, SRR have got to be the favourite.

lots of gunners did plain clothes intelligence work during op banner, there were at least 10-12 on each deployment to northern ireland,in each and every regt that took part.

The only time I can remember any type of plain clothes surveillance in the RA, was in the 'Shakespeare' disco on Powis Street in Woolwich whilst eyeing up the local heifers.

I'm surprised he would mention anything sneaky especially if you have not signed on. Any thing special forces stays special forces

Recommend, if you are interested in this sort of thing, that you give it a bit of time to make sure that this is what you want to do as well as getting fit and a bit of time/ leadership course under your belt. It will give you a better chance at whatever they do.

yes i think you are right. its just a bit of grooming. i have no intention of being one of them or even considering it. he just came out with it and it struck me as odd that he would tell a would be recruit that if he's "hard" enough then he can "blow shit up" and learn under water ninja knife fighting.

however i must add that as soon as i realised he had told me too much he could not finish his sentence as the cheese wire round his neck soon expired him. leaks about "the increment" in a recruiting office. must report this to M

younghopeful out........

Does not apply here and in any case it's voluntary.
