Because, I think, the LCpl is posting the sentry. There are several occasions when the NCO does not have the bayonet fixed, watch the video of the Escort for the Word at the TofL and the Sgt does not have bayonet fixed.

I have noticed this on other occasions and asked why, but no answer.

My own thoughts is this goes back to ye olde days when Sergeants were armed with long pikes to keep the ranks straight and not armed with a musket. But I have no real idea.
Oh that's brought an unpleasant memory back from my childhood.
My dad was ex 3rd battalion Grenadier Guards. When my brother or me had screwed up as kids, he would beast us on the back yard by making us do the guard changing using our lonestar cap rifles.
Better than the belt I suppose.

My dad was ex Para Regt, so when my brother or I screwed up he would make us carry a log and beast us round the local area.

My dad was ex RAF, so we would have no-name cakes for afternoon tea.

Mine ex Reg & Blade too. When playing toy soldiers as a kid if he passed the 'battlefield' within the next 10 minutes my game would be bollocksed as i'd have had to re site my MG support teams, my mortars would have been moved back about 6 feet & the armoured spearhead attack I was just initiating would have been curtailed until the light armour had moved up into an overwatch position as well as some bazooka teams being pushed forward to take out any german armour that may lurk in the bushes substituted for the Ardennes forest.

My Dad was in the Legion of Frontiersmen.

We had to polish all 375 of his medals every week.

Field Punishment Number One for forgetting to put the loo seat down was no laughing matter, etc, etc.
